Just for burning

You have to wait for the Church of Jobs to bless Blu-Ray playback, becaue they refuse to provide the hooks to outside companies to write DVD, let alone Blu-Ray players for Mac.

Toast is a Mac recording program. Nero records and plays but just PC. No Mac players yet.

iMac is supposed to be cheap. Not going to happen, a BR burner is still going to add 4-500, especially at apple prices

We know St. Steve WANTS Blu-ray (especially in Disney form), since it's derived from QuickTime-compatible H.264, not Windows Media--
Up till now, though, he's been forced to sit on the fence because Apple hi-def editing software is the most popular one used by studios, and he doesn't want to lose Universal as a customer by turning his own company Blu.

Was a rumor last year that the next Apple hi-def drive would be dual-format, but, ermm...don't think that particular worry's going to last much longer.

Well, if you consider having a seat on Blu-Ray's Board of Directors is being on-the-fence.

It is more likely that Jobs is waiting for the player and writer technologies to stabilize, Apple, while often a technology trendsetter, does put things in the machines which they feel are fully ready for prime-time.

iMacs are not "cheap". (You're thinking of the Mac Mini.) There are various models of iMac that include a more budget-friendly price-point of around $1100, but their core and flagship configurations are $1500 and $2000, respectively.

Or a Blu-ray burner could also be made available as an upgrade when ordering online or via the Apple Store, or as an enhanced configuration for the 24" model, which is what I'm assuming will be the case.

iMacs are Apple's cheap computers. They're supposed to be for the lower end, and not the power users who would be doing things with HD.

The cheapest BR burner out there right now is running +/- $450 at OEM prices, which means that Apple will charge at least $500. If it's an external drive, as it likely has to be in an iMac, make that $6-700.

iMacs are low-end? How is that? Mine seems to be a damn fine machine. They support HD, the 24 inch version has a 1080p screen, and the resolution on my 17" is 1440x900, making it HD.

iMacs are NOT cheap - not by any stretch of the imagination.
Sure, you can start out with the most affordable iMac ($999, I think), but even that little baby can be one sizzling machine - thanks, in part, to the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. HD--wise, ANY iMac is terrific!!
And, of course, you can move up to the more expensive iMacs with bigger screens, more memory, bigger hard drives, and even more powerful/faster Core 2 Duos.
iMacs, any way you slice them, are some of THE best personal computers on the planet, and even the baby iMac can run circles around any Winblows-based PC out there.

Jodi

P.S. Did you hear about Bill Gates' mansion?? It has lots of "Windows".

Hmmm.......maybe, just maybe, the first Quad iMac?? You know, an iMac with Intel Core 2 Quad?? Maybe?? Ummm...probably not. Probably wouldn't be financially lucrative for Apple. But, wishful thinking never hurts!!!!

The cheap macintosh compuer is NOT suppose to be the iMac. The iMac is suppose to be the EASY computer The one that has everything in it and you don't need anythin else to add on, not that it won't work with add-ons cause it does.

But APPLE is a spporter of Blu-ray, so you can expect to see the upper-end models sporting the new BDplayers/burners most likely bundled with a DVD/CD bruner. I can't say they are goig to release that right now, but the timing seems about right.
Perhaps the new iMac will have it, but I suspect that the new Tower will have it regardless.

I hope that they do get a good priced BD burner in their computers cause I am waiting to upgrade my system until APPLE finished 2 things.... BD players, ad the new Mac OS 10.5.
