Set Speakers to Small
Front
Center
Surrounds
Subwoofer Yes

Crossover at 80hz, as callas has mentioned.

There is also an auto calibration included as well, if you would like to go that route. As long as you double check the speaker settings at SMALL.

80 HZ for all of them callas?? Because on the specs for the CN-5000 it says it goes down to 85 hz...I am not trying to say your information is incorrect I just wanted to be sure...Hey thanks for the post on this..I started the thread in the wrong section(speakers) but I have no idea how to delete it??

Ok thanks jamari...I really appreciate the help that callas and yourself has given me over the upgrade to my system...I just wanted to be sure of the crossover settings, my old receiver the one I am using right now sets all the crossovers at 120hz and I cannot change them, so I have never messed with crossover settings before.

80hz is a guideline setting we refer to when we try to calibrate the crossover settings. Its not the BAR for it, but i follow the one octave rule, depending on how low the speaker can go (and how much it can feasibly use in such respect), based on the specs and response of the speaker.

do you have the model numbers by the way of the speakers? we can try to see what crossover point would match them in relation to what they're capable of.

Just a thought.

Hi nautica250,

I have almost the exact same setup as you, except my fronts are the SSF-5000's.

Did the auto calibration, and it set all of my speaks to large, contrary to what has been said here.

Fronts- Sony SS B-3000

Frequency Response : 50 - 50,000 Hz

You CAN try to set it at 80hz, but id try 60hz and see how you might like it.

Center- Sony SS CN-5000

Frequency Response : 85 - 50,000 Hz

Set crossover at 80hz

Surrounds- Sony SS B-1000

Frequency Response : 80 - 50,000 Hz

Set crossover at 80hz

Sub- Sony SS WA-2500

Set crossover to the highest point, and meddle with the gain or the volume knob. if you have two subs, try fiddling with its phase, and see if it works better in or out of phase in relation to the second one.

i do prefer that the crossovers for the front be uniformed at 80hz, instead of 60 (even if it can handle it), to avoid any challenges with multiple sources of lower frequencies.

Best of luck!

I haven't received it yet, I will be receiving it Thursday, and yes thank you for reminding me, Callas has been great help throughout everything as well. You both are great at giving advice in everything that involves HT. And even though I am not running the best equipment in my setup, Neither one of you guys have been critical of it and I really appreciate that. I'll chime in when I receive the DH-700 and let you know how I like it...I am very excited about listening to the new HD audio. I am sure that both of you get asked this question all of the time but is the difference awesome?? I am hoping so, but even if not I have a much more capable receiver. Thank You once again to BOTH of you!!

The Crossover thread is way over my head too.

Read A Guide to Bass Management thread. It may be easier to understand.

Well, thats the part we try to emphasize on here, we dont want you to miraculously come up with some money to replace everything, nor do we 'ridicule' other setups so to speak. we have our limits, other responsibilities, and reasons why we can have such setups. we are blessed enough as we are to fulfill them, what more to maximize em. we do need more pictures in the HT gallery section you got nautica.

for what its worth, this parts a tad critical. in fact, can be a highly debatable topic, and sadly, reason for tantrums and bickering so to speak. it really depends on how you view it. you can definitely say that replacing certain components in the scheme of things can improve the dynamics of a home theater, but we have to ponder on,
- is it because of the new components? (in this case the AVR)
- what about the comparison point? comparing lets say a vw beetle to a mini coop is different than comparing that beetle to a ferrari...
- is it because of the media? its encoding? its bitrate?
- what about the connections utilized? which DACs is being used?
- and so on...

for what its worth, try using the good ol cd, and work with that. see and compare your avr system, currently hooked up, pull out the good ol spl meter (which i highly suggest investing in), and put it to the test.

then use the new avr, and see how it sounds.

personally, any improvement can be seen no matter what. its placebo at times, but more or less how we feel about it too can be blamed.

If you can make any micheal mcdonald song gloriously understandable then by god you've got yourself an amazing setup!

I've got the DH700 right now and can say without a doubt that the HD is better. I can't say I was as blown away as I thought I'd be but it's enough of a difference to make me not want to listen to the core DD and DTS tracks.

I'll be picking up an Elite VSX01 soon which should run much more efficient and a good heft of power over the 700, I'll see then how much of a difference the HD makes over the core. I must admit though, things do seem to have more of a crisp sound to them and I do pick up on the little things more.

Need to correct my statement...it actually set my front speaks to large (perhaps because they can handle lower frequencies?) & the center & surrounds to small.

Regarding the question about how much difference the HD sound is, YES I noticed a great difference from my HTiB with Dolby Digital & "regular" DTS.
