Default Rate blu-ray SOUND PREFERENCE in order

Blu-Rays offer a lot of sound, but all are different. Could you guys give me a list of what is the recommended preference or in terms of quality, what is the best option if I had to choose? I have a 7.1 setup and am wondering how to show off my sound to my friends and myself.

Lionsgate will be your friend when having a 7.1 setup.

Theres a thread somewhere discussing best AQ on blus.

I would reccomend 3:10 to Yuma it has 7.1 and it sounds great!

also:
T2: skynet edition- 6.1
Terminator Salvation
Top Gun- 6.1
Iron Man

Usually Action movies will really show off that setup. But like I said 3:10 is just crisp and clear and it's a great film.

Ive never listened to a 7.1 before so do the extra 2 speakers sit in between the front and rears and what actually comes out of them is it just similar effects to the rears.

What's the pecking order?

Dolby Digital Plus
Dolby True HD
DTS-HD Master

Get it?

Which ones should I be AIMING to get on a blu-ray? Which one will make me moist?

DTS-HD, TrueHD, and PCM are the same. The lossy codecs are lower on the pecking order. Just make your your reciever can decode them. Personally I think the benefits of lossless sound are overstated, it's nice to have if the rest of your system is up to scratch but lossless won't make my old HTIB rig sound like my B&W towers.

They are marketed as the same, but are they? I and some Sony personnel attended a demo at Dolby Labs up in San Francisco a couple years ago. Two of us did hear a difference between Dolby TrueHD and PCM. And I can hear a sonic "characteristic" of DTS HD MA distinct from the other codecs. But these are very minor differences that few would hear or care about.

1. PCM=TrueHD=DTS-MA.........3 way tie between these.
2. DD+@ 1.5 and DTS-HD at 1.5
3. Everything else is below these.

Even though there is a 1 and 2, the real world audible differences between these 2 is next to nothing IMO, but if you have the choice of lossless you should obviously go that route.

It like 4 equally split rears. I don't have one but my next system will be for sure.

There's an audio folder for questions like this, and it's been answered before.

1. Uncompressed = PCM
2. Dolby TrueHD = Compressed and Lossless
3. DTS HD MA = Compressed and Lossless

4. DTS Digital = Compressed and Lossy
5. Dolby Digital = Compressed and Lossy

As for 7.1, it's not featured on enough titles to make it worthwhile in my opinion, but that didn't stop me from going to a 7.1 setup a couple years ago when I thought it would become the standard for Blu-ray.

yea this should be in the audio threads, but use anything with HD by it or Uncompressed.

Although they are RARELY used you forgot Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution: Better than standard Dolby and DTS but obviously not as good as TrueHD and Master Audio.

I know Dolby Digital Plus was pretty exclusive to HD-DVD, but DTS-HD HR does show up on some Blu-Rays.

1. Uncompressed Linear PCM
2. DTS HD MA
3. Dolby TrueHD
4. DTS Digital
5. Dolby Digital

Uncompressed Linear PCM and DTS HD MA are the clear cut winners for me. Everytime I hear a TrueHD track (aside from The Dark Knight), it sounds a hint on the flat side when volume matching is applied.

Many people will say that TrueHD & DTS HD MA are the exact same because of tech specs of the codecs on paper. However, it is consistent that DTS HD MA track sounds better to me in range of the audio spectrum and depth of detail.
