Default The NEW WAVE Thread

We know we like little new wave music within us, so I'd figure we make a thread dedicated to everything new wave (artists like Blondie, Duran Duran, Rick Astley, Gary Numan). So, who is one of the greatest new wave artist(s) of all time? Who are your favorite new wave artists? Discuss it here.

What about him? What are some of your favorite songs? Albums? All I know is that he performed in Live Aid.

Every self-respecting New Wave fan has all 15 volumes of Rhino's "Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s" CDs.

I wouldn't consider any of those bands as new wave except for maybe Duran Duran. When I think of New Wave I would consider the following:
Japan
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Joy Division
The Smiths
Yaz
Tears For Fears
Assembly
B-movie
China Crisis
Berlin
Human League
Images in Vogue
New Order
OMD
Simple Minds

I'd generally agree with that, but if I were to take great issue with one of the original list it would be Rick Astley. He was pure Stock, Aitken and Waterman pop.

Many great bands mentioned, so in an effort to not go over old ground, I'll throw these out there.

Altered Images (Clare Grogan...swoon...)
The Red Guitars
The Fire Engines
Adam and the Ants
The Fiction Factory
The Icicle Works
The Mighty Wah!
Indians in Moscow
Icehouse
The Associates (RIP Billy )
The Teardrop Explodes

I miss those days....

Dead or Alive
Erasure
Bronski Beat
Arcadia
Bauhaus
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Aha
Fine Young Cannibals
Wang Chung

See that's why I don't understand why some people don't like all music. New Wave eventually lead to Electro and Breaks which is now a part of modern Rap and Pop.

So New Wave -> Ke$ha

See Kotse, you should LOVE the song Tik Tok.

I certainly understand what your saying and personally I'll give most things a go musically (at least once anyway!). I think the problem is that no matter what the intent and spirit of a genre is initially, they very frequently become a refined and directionless product created by the wrong people for the wrong reason. This is then foisted on folks via the most accessible outlets and ends up redefining the genre.

There certainly are some very credible exponents of pretty much any musical style you could wish for swilling around out there at the moment, however many folks are either ignorant to it or don't care to dig for what they listen to.

Or am I just talking bollocks? Did I even stay on topic?

I too was puzzled by the mention of Rick Astley as new wave. He is definitely pure pop.

Although most consider them to be more "post-punk" than "new wave," I have to toss Killing Joke's name out there. I always recommend them to any of my friends who like new wave and they always thank me for it later. Check out the song "Love Like Blood;" it's just a beautiful and timeless masterpiece.

"Love Like Blood" sounds very new wave to me.

Talking about post-punk, no music has captivated me more than that of Joy Division and New Order from 1979 to 1989.
