Default Seeking laptop recommendations

Looking to get a Laptop for the wife, as we don't use our $1000 ex-gaming PC anymore.

All we need a laptop for is the web. No word processing (got work laptops for that) no gaming (that's what the PS3 is for now heheh).

I was thinking of getting a Dell Inspiron. She was thinking about getting an Acer netbook, but I'm like.. for ~$100 more, get a real computer

So for anyone that owns a laptop, please let me know what kind.

Thanks!

I have an Acer. I have no issues with it. They make pretty good products.

I'm not big on the netbook trend. At least my laptop has HDMI out so we can stream stuff to the TV

What's the budget? That's perhaps the most important question to ask here before going any further.

I've heard good things about Acer, by the way. I don't have any real experience with them other than basic troubleshooting and stuff, but from what I've heard they're good buys.

I've used many ACER products, well motherboards at least, and they perform great and have top notch customer support. I'm personally not a Dell fan, but to each his own. From the sounds of it, you just need a very basic $500 laptop.

Default I'm in the same boat...

...my laptop just pooped out two days ago and I'm also looking for a new laptop. I like to spend at least $1,000 on my next one. I've been to Best Buy and they had some decent selections. I need to have at least an Intel i5 or i7 in my new laptop. I'll be using the laptop mainly for internet use and uploading pics. I'm not really big on computer gaming (thats why I have my Xbox360).

Any suggestions on a good brand?? I was thinking maybe Dell, Toshiba or HP.

Sorry OP, not trying to take over your thread.

I'm also not really a Dell fan, despite having two of them in my home that I use for HTPC purposes only. We've had nothing but troubles with our Dell server at work since we bought it in December 2008. My mother, who works for the local government here in Santa Cruz as a computer tech support admin, reported 100% failure rate of the Dell desktops in a division of her facility. Not all were catastrophic, mind you (some were fully shot, to the extent of kernel corruption; some had more minor issues), but EACH ONE had something wrong with it. Her experience along with my own from not only the server situation at work, but with other Dell desktops there as well, is what has really started pushing me over to the Mac side of things as far as personal preference for my own use as well as for admin at my work.

I never recommend Dell to anyone for any reason...ever. If you're going to go with a Windows-based laptop, I would go with something like HP, if you can.

I'd get one with a BD player..you can get them for $500 which is a decent deal.
