Default Alice in Wonderland (2010) BR - June

According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, the new Alice in Wonderland (2010) will be coming to DVD and BluRay approximately 3 months after it's release in theaters.

Apparently, some theaters in the UK are up in arms and refusing to show it.

"But despite all this nurturing of Burton's vision, his movie is under threat of being smothered at birth. Quite extraordinarily, the UK's three largest cinema chains - Odeon, Vue and Cineworld - are threatening not to show it.

They account for 65 per cent of the UK's cinemas, and 90 per cent of the 3-D screens, so the threat is a serious one. Given that the premiere is next Thursday and the movie opens on March 5, it's a disaster.

The cause of the angst is that Disney wants to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray only three months after it opens at the cinema, rather than the standard 17 weeks. It wants to get the DVD into the shops before the midsummer doldrums, and to capitalise on the marketing of the movie while it is still fresh in people's minds.

But the cinemas are afraid that people will just wait to buy the film on DVD rather than spend money on going to the pictures. They aren't alone: four big cinema chains in Holland are boycotting the film and the Italians are rebelling, too."

I find it hard to want to go to the theaters when they have such quick turn around time 3 months is not a long wait at all.

The buzz I'm getting is a lot of theatres are refusing to buy it now because they think people will just skip the trip to the theatre and buy it when it hits disc.

That would be interesting if a lot of theaters refuse to show it.

How would the average theater-goer even know about it's scheduled release date?

It seems to me that if the studios and theater companies had kept this information tightly-wrapped, then the DVD/BR release date wouldn't even be an issue. Personally, I didn't know the turnaround would be that soon, but I can see why people would wait now that the unofficial release date is out in the open.

I plan on seeing it in 3D theaters regardless.

Then again, Avatar's been out for just about two months now and I've put it out of my mind (once it broke Titanic's record). By the time May gets here Iron Man will have all of the spotlight and no one will really care about Alice, 3-month runs aren't too far fetched.

I'm pretty sure Disney wants the movie out of the theaters prior to the June release of Toy Story 3. Why they are so gung-ho to get out the BD/DVD out I'm not sure, wondering if Disney isn't sure how people are going to react to this movie.

I thought it looked great but the more they show of the Red Queen and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum the less enthused I am for the movie.

good. Maybe they should quit charging so much to go to a movie. I literally built a theater in my house to avoid the 6 dollar popcorn

What's the big deal with the 3 month thing? Over here, after 3 months, all the movies have already made their way out of the big chain theaters and are being shown at the 2$ second run theaters, any ways.

IMHO People who like to watch movies in theatres will see this in theatres. The home video crowd will see this at home. It sounds like a tempest in a teapot.

With the plethora of new 3D titles with a limited number of 3D screens, I wonder if there are other issues at play here.

I prefer the single disc slip art but will still end up buying the multi-disc version instead. The multi-disc slip art isn't bad, it's just not as good as the other, imo.

Ditto, A black cover with Chester eyes would have been nice too.
