Anyone remember the MTV show "Basement Tapes?"

I was telling a buddy of mine the other day that I seem to remember this show back in the 80's and it was a sort of early concept of what American Idol is. I don't think there were a panel of judges, I think it was purely call in and vote. However I think it was aspiring artists that would make their own videos and submit them. MTV would air them and people would vote.

1.) Does anyone here remember that show?

2.) Did any siginificant artists come out of that show?
