Default Last Samurai

One of the best war movies I've ever seen, still think Watanabe got robbed for best supporting actor. Cruise turned in a strong performance as well in my opinion and the ending always gets me going. I dunno, maybe this movie affects me as much as it does because I'm Asian?

You really need to look into Twilight Samurai if you haven't already. This film is so much more realistic and way better overall. Truly what The Last Samurai wanted to be. Do yourself a favor, especially since you're Asian as well am I.

Thought the movie was good. But not a great one. Glory done by the same Director is much better.

I wouldn't say MUCH better, both have their moments. Both for example have a scene where the CO tries to get one of his troops to fire while under pressure before that troop is ready to do it. Both also pretty much end with one final charge by the main character's troops that end in vain. Many parallels to be found.

Only lossy audio makes that aspect of the release a disappointment. On the other hand, the PQ is good.

Most Zwick films have someone important pass away at the end besides that recent crap he released called Defiance.

I am usualy more worried on the PQ then AQ. I truly don't have a system good enough to make such a difference in sound right now. It's the one part of my HT that is truly horrible. I need to do something about it in 2010

Glory had the outstanding casts in general compared to Samurai plus the story seemed more original (I know its based on a true story) than Samurai. One thing I got to give thumbs up for Samurai is the visuals that were captured. Absolutely stunning.

I'm still holding out for something better than 5.1 DD

The last samurai didn't have Emmy Rossum in it. So its a big disappointment.

Last Samurai is a great, underrated film. The only real criticism against it is that it's unoriginal, but that's the case for many films. The acting, directing, cinematography, costume design, and music are all top-notch. It's Zwick's best film (yes, better than Glory).

The blu has good PQ but the AQ is weak.

Yeah the lossy audio is my only knock against it but it is definitely my favourite Tom Cruise film to date and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten it yet. Good film about culture in 1800s Japan, times changing, the way of the Samurai and so on and so forth.

+1 It would sound better with a 7.1 DTSMA soundtrack. It'll eventually get remastered.

agreed on all counts. this film gives braveheart and gladiator a run for their money. i guess in all 3,
[Show spoiler] cruise, crowe and gibson end up fighting their ally (gibson less so), but IMO only cruise had a major radical shift in ideology and perspective. that may be a good basis for it being the tiebreaker

I enjoyed this movie a lot and I agree that it would've been even better with lossless audio.

I think Zwick is a master story teller, and I have yet to see a bad movie from him. The Last Samurai is no exception. Cruise's acting was excellent, Watanabe phenomenal. I too believe that he was robbed of an Oscar. Now if only WB re-released this with lossless audio, then I'd be ecstatic. I don't feel like importing the HK or Polish versions for $30+ just to have TrueHD sound.
