I love my copy of Last Samurai on Blu, an uncompressed audio track would be nice though.
As for the culture... this film isn't a good example of Japan in this era. It makes the Samurai look like angels and wise Zen Buddhist masters. Very sappy as well. I still love it though. |

I actually love this movie. I've seen it several times and it's never get's boring even after repeat viewings
Here is an excerpt from dvdtalk.com about PQ (The 2.35:1 transfer here is identical to that found on the HD DVD. Aside from a couple of minor flaws (two very brief noisy shots, one grainy horizon), it's damned near perfect. Color saturation is exceptional, as are black levels. The level of detail is very impressive. And while I had expected all of the smoke and fog that is present in many scenes to wreak havoc on the image quality, I'm happy to admit I was wrong.) I must agree with the reviewer. I also own the dvd version and the blu-ray version blows it out of the water |

This and The Phantom of the Opera were the first two HD DVD releases (prior to the launch of Blu-ray), and the Blu-ray is likely just a port of the HD DVD. A reissue with lossless audio would be nice, but it's still a decent disc - I think I'd rather see Warner release a movie that isn't on Blu yet than revisit this title right now.

Surely they will douple dip this one at some point and include lossless audio, may even include new transfer. I just don't see them not double dipping on most of the titles, especially the first ones. Heck, it's already been almost 3 years since some of them came out.

I'll wait too to get either the Lossless Audio version IF/when they decide to release it. (or if I find a copy Cheap online somewhere until the above happens). This was a very good enjoyable movie I thought, Ed Zwick is a great director IMO, & it looks like this has a decent amount of Extras.
I might do what the poster above wrote ("Eagle 23"), and just BUY Lossless BR's. The 5.1's are kind of useless in a way if you have a good Audio system you want to hear Do its Magic! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I really enjoyed this movie... Tom did a solid job in demonstrating his use of the Katana.
