Post Last Samurai

One of my favourite movies about Japanese culture, I think it deserves a much better transfer than it got, say with a better video code and a much better audio codec. Anyone else?

I love my copy of Last Samurai on Blu, an uncompressed audio track would be nice though.

As for the culture... this film isn't a good example of Japan in this era. It makes the Samurai look like angels and wise Zen Buddhist masters. Very sappy as well. I still love it though.

I definitely agree. I'd love to get this if it only had HD audio as I refuse to buy anymore movies without either PCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD. Non the less, great movie but I'll just stick w/ my DVD.

Almost ordered it on WBshop with there sale over the weekend but held out. I'm not buying it until they re-release it with lossless audio. Great movie by the way.

Thumbs up

I actually love this movie. I've seen it several times and it's never get's boring even after repeat viewings

Here is an excerpt from dvdtalk.com about PQ

(The 2.35:1 transfer here is identical to that found on the HD DVD. Aside from a couple of minor flaws (two very brief noisy shots, one grainy horizon), it's damned near perfect. Color saturation is exceptional, as are black levels. The level of detail is very impressive. And while I had expected all of the smoke and fog that is present in many scenes to wreak havoc on the image quality, I'm happy to admit I was wrong.)

I must agree with the reviewer. I also own the dvd version and the blu-ray version blows it out of the water

It looks very typical of early Warner efforts in high-definition. I like the movie but it needs a much better release. Unfortunately Warner holds worldwide rights to it so doubtful we will ever see an upgrade.

This and The Phantom of the Opera were the first two HD DVD releases (prior to the launch of Blu-ray), and the Blu-ray is likely just a port of the HD DVD. A reissue with lossless audio would be nice, but it's still a decent disc - I think I'd rather see Warner release a movie that isn't on Blu yet than revisit this title right now.

Surely they will douple dip this one at some point and include lossless audio, may even include new transfer. I just don't see them not double dipping on most of the titles, especially the first ones. Heck, it's already been almost 3 years since some of them came out.

It's a decent release; due to the nature of the photography, there are some softer shots. Some scenes actually look very good. I agree lossless would be nice, but the current track is still pretty good.

Default Real Good Movie

I'll wait too to get either the Lossless Audio version IF/when they decide to release it. (or if I find a copy Cheap online somewhere until the above happens). This was a very good enjoyable movie I thought, Ed Zwick is a great director IMO, & it looks like this has a decent amount of Extras.

I might do what the poster above wrote ("Eagle 23"), and just BUY Lossless BR's. The 5.1's are kind of useless in a way if you have a good Audio system you want to hear Do its Magic!

I really enjoyed this movie... Tom did a solid job in demonstrating his use of the Katana.

phenomenal movie, from the voyage across on the boat, to the scenic forests shots, to the japanese village, just perfect.

my favorite part though was cruise's characters transformation. believable and real.

Yeah, but I hated the ending. Spoilered, as there's probably SOMEONE out there that hasn't seen it yet.

[Show spoiler]I really think Cruise's character should've died, and the sword came to the Emperor posthumously through a different survivor. I felt like allowing him to live was too much of a Hollywood ending.

I still love this movie, and seriously- you can get this thing for cheap if you don't mind used.
