I remember first seeing this movie back when I was an undergrad, and I couldn't last over 30 minutes without turning it off.
I've finally decided to buy it, and give it a go on Blu-ray format with my friend (who has never seen it). First off, the PQ was pretty damn good. There's some intentional blooming and blurring for some scenes which is understandable to get the "anime" look, but there are other scenes which are some of the sharpest I've seen on the BD format. The AQ was very amazing as well. It's a crappy movie, but if you watch it as an "anime" movie, it's actually not too terrible. Ultraviolet by it's very nature is a live-action anime. Instead of a complex plot, it has a simple plot, but it's told in a very confusing way, so it's kinda the same thing. Here are some goods that I was able to take out of the movie, along with some cons: The Goods: * Action scenes were extremely well done. Watching Milla kick ass (even if it's just PG-13 style) was really exciting. It's a rip off of the Matrix and other wire-karate movies, but it does a fantastic job doing this. * The environments are really awesome. There's lots of different colors from scene to scene. Certain things look more digitized than others (the bike scene where she was riding on the side of the building), but again, taking into account that it's sort-of an anima makes it tolerable. * Some of the Sci-fi ideas are just really awesome. The anti-gravity device (this was ok), the disposable cell phone (this is really awesome), along with some few other inventions were really cool to see. * The music was very good, and very diverse. The epic battle music at the end was cool. * The film itself is a visual treat. * Milla did a great job, and she was really believable as Ultraviolet. The Cons: * There is no apparent theme in the movie. I THINK the main theme in the movie is the fact that Ultraviolet never had a child, and she could finally be a mother. However, due to the plot and the direction, this was never fully portrayed and emotive. What this means, is that the scenes in where you were suppose to feel emotional between the two never happened. It was a good theme, but the direction completely failed in making it work. * There are two scenes in which Milla takes down many men, but you never get to see it as the direction skips past it. This was irritating, as the action scenes is the main facet in this movie. * Direction and explanation of plot was very confusing and poor. However, if you think of this like your average anime, then it's not such a huge deficit. * They made Ultraviolet completely unstoppable. This was kinda cool in some ways, but you never feel the sense of urgency or danger in any way. She's probably one of the most powerful action heros I have ever seen on screen. Overall, I'm actually glad I have it in my collection. It's a bad movie, but it almost comes across as a slightly good bad movie. 5.5/10 |
