Default Samsung UN46C8000 3-D LED HDTV Thread

Hi there,

I currently have a Samsung LN40A650 1080p hdtv, SHARP HP-21U BD-Player, and a Samsung HT-AS720 5.1 Amp + Speakers.

Nothing spectacular but less than 2 years with all of this i'm already thinking of taking the 3-D plunge. I love my television but i'm VERY dissatisfied with the black levels of my current LCD. I have a couple of flashlights and slight clouding that the average person wouldn't notice but i dwell on, and in instances of dark scenes in film i am drawn to it. It has bothered me for months and months.

Before i get yelled at for not going Plasma if i am so obsessed with inky black levels please note that i use my HDTV as a second monitor for my PC as well, and image retention and burn in are a huge factor for me. You can have a look at my gallery and it will give you a better idea.

My initial and first idea was to get the Samsung UN46B8500. Unfortuantely, it was not released in Canada, thus not a possibility. The full array LED back light was the perfect answer my my black level woes, too bad.......

I have read that Samsung, for pricing reasons will be sticking with edge lit LED models from now on, but the new "UN46C8000" will feature an innovative hybrid LED backlight which will improve black levels to near plasma levels and eliminate flashlighting / clouding. This is something that only the 9000 series and 8000 series will feature. Anything else such as the 7000 series will strickly be edge lit...

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...f4bbe018f9en02

I realize it may be difficult to answer as there are currently no reviews on 3D LED Samsung models but here we go anyways:

1. Will the UN46C8000 truly 100% eliminate uneven backlights and get rid of that awful flashlighting and clouding that has plagued LCD since being introduced?

With this new type of LED backlighting i wonder if it is as great as advertised. I am more concerned about black levels then i am about 3-D, so i want to be sure i won't have any nasty surprises....

2. Will i absolutely have to replace my Receiver which is only HDMI 1.3 compatible?

My current setup has the HT-AS-720 doing a spiffy job for a small room and i don't want to replace it because of HDMI 1.4.

3. Will there be ANY 3-D compatible bluray players which will feature a HDMI 1.4 Video out, AND a HDMI Audio Out 1.3?

This would defer me from having to replace my A/V receiver.....I believe the current 3-D bluray players only have HDMI 1.4 out, meaning i'm screwed....

If anyone can answer these questions, shed some light, or help in any way I would be very appreciative. Thank you kindly in advance

-Joe

For the time being, it's pointless to purchase a 3D display (personally I won't purchase one until we are able to see 3D with out the stupid glasses) IMO.

I can see why many people are hesitant to upgrade to a 3-D display. It could end up being a gimmicky flop as many have predicted or might in fact take off, who knows! I for one am interested and that is why i'm here asking my questions.

Therefore, I would like to keep this thread on track and for it not to turn into a 3-D debate. Thanks guys!

I agree...I would wait also, maybe another yr.I jumped on the LCD bandwagon too early and ended paying out the rear for it, not going to make that mistake again.

I would personally hold off until later in the year to make the upgrade. Also remember you will likely need to replace the BD player as well.

Yes, i will have to replace the BD Player. Likely the A/V Receiver too for HDMI 1.4

Again, I appreciate the opinions on everyone's 3-D viewpoint. Again, while i can see why everyone is hesitant about purchasing a 3-D TV, it was not the purpose of this thread to start a 3-D vs. no 3-D debate.

I apologize if my initial post was not clear but i am looking for information about the supposed improved black levels on the LED back lighting, and about the 3-D bluray players potentially having support for audio out HDMI 1.3.

I hope i've clarified the purpose of this thread. Thank you kindly.

I Have some of the same questions you do!

1. Will the UN46C8000 truly 100% eliminate uneven backlights and get rid of that awful flashlighting and clouding that has plagued LCD since being introduced?

I am also looking at this TV for an upgrade but until I can demo it and see how it performs (black levels/couding) I will hold off. Have you found any reviews on this set yet?

2. Will i absolutely have to replace my Receiver which is only HDMI 1.3 compatible?

I was wondering the same. I am hoping they can come out with some sort of adapter so all of our receivers aren't now a complete waste when watching a 3D movie.

No reviews as of yet. At least we're on the same boat!

I saw the Samsung 7000 3-D t.v at best buy today. 55 inch for 3500 yikes. It looked nice, but why buy it now. There is nothing to play on it in 3-D. By the end of the year maybe 3 movies and a few games. I won't be touching 3-D at least until 2012 to see how this all plays out.

I concur, the black levels on the A650 are great for an LCD, but you don't know me. I'm one of the most anal people when it comes to perfection, and just the sight of a single flashlight is enough to ruin my entire experience.....

I'm hoping the C8000 series fixes the problem of uneven backlighting and produces near perfect black levels.

Edit:

I just found this:

http://translate.google.com/translat...l-dimming.html

Please forgive the harsh translation but i think it gives a good idea of what we are looking at with the C8000 series LED. I simply can't wait to read reviews on this television. I found a couple of the C7000 series and the quality of backlight is about equal to the B6000, B7000, and B8000 series of LED from 2009. Of course this does not include the backlight B8500.

C7000 series user reviews. Please scroll all the way down. In terms of black levels and a even backlighting i'm not feeling very optimistic about the 7000, here's hoping the 8000 improves upon these problems:

It will be a good few years before I go that way I'll wait til the whole 2012 thing blows over come one 2013. I will see what happens and let the pricing drop like I did with 1080p sets.

Another poor impression on the C7000's black levels and lack of uniformity on the back lighting system.

Hopefully the C8000 and C9000 series doesn't follow suit....

I think your point is exactly what others have been trying to convey to the OP.

It's really difficult to fairly evaluate a 3D TV, when there is no content for it yet, either broadcast, disc-based, or game. I doubt anyone here has read a professional review, let alone auditioned one in person.

I would suggest waiting until there is sufficient content and competitors to evaluate a set for purchase - especially given the premium being charged for 3D.

This is just a product of all the hype that 3D movies in the theater have generated. Now when I buy tickets I have too many choices- 2D, 3D (also disney digital 3D depending on the movie) and then the ever impressive and expensive IMAX 2D or IMAX 3D.

This technology is so far away from being even a consideration as there arent enough manufacturers or software ready to even get excited. I mean we just pushed networks and everyone to go digital for that big "conversion" that just occurred. You seriously think networks are gonna try shooting shows in 3D?
For me I find it hard to believe I can have the same effect in my home as on a big screen in a theater. And i cant believe anyone is even considering buying one at this point.
