Heartbreak Ridge Blu-ray

Only movie I can think of that had the Grenada conflict. My "cool" know-it-all college history professor said the only reason the U.S. went in was because of the threat to the oil coming out of Venezuela. OK movie, wish the last part of the movie was longer then the comedy filled first part. Kind of like Valkyrie, wish the movie was more of the North Africa battle scene then the espionage/ sabotage part. One of Peebles best roles.

Typical of the one-sided BS being taught in schools today. From your comment, I assume you know better? Hopefully you set Mr. "know-it-all" straight.

OT: Good movie. Originally saw it in the theaters when it first released, and then maybe once or twice since. May have to buy it if the price is right.

This class was in the mid 80s, right after it happened. At the time, most of the world, and the democrats thought the reason was more of a U.S. response to a new Communist government in the Caribbean, the domino effect vs protecting the oil trade routes from a rogue nation (think reflagging of Kuwait oil tankers to protect them from Iran). No one believed the reason given by Reagan, saving a handful of U.S. medical students. The U.N. vote was 122 to 9 AGAINST the US invasion. They were going to do a security counsel vote but the U.S. vetoed it. Even the Brits were shocked.

Prime Minister Thatcher replied to President Reagan's notification of the impending invasion: "This action will be seen as intervention by a Western country in the internal affairs of a small independent nation, however unattractive its regime. I ask you to consider this in the context of our wider East-West relations and of the fact that we will be having in the next few days to present to our Parliament and people the siting of Cruise missiles in this country...I cannot conceal that I am deeply disturbed by your latest communication."

Anyway, he was a dynamic guy, in his late 30s, usually had an unlit cigar in is mouth, smoked them in his office. This was at a community college by the way. He was full of all kind of stories that were not in history books at the time that wowed 18-19 year olds. 2 of the more memorable were that Lincoln was an illegitimate child (there are some stories that Thomas Lincoln was not really his father) and the Spanish American War was started because President McKinley claims he had a dream in which God commanded him to invade. He had the exact words up on the overhead projector that McKinley used. And that one checks out.

OT: I was worried when I saw this movie that Clint had developed throat cancer (smoker) because his voice is almost gone. He has sounded better in later movies so I guess he was trying for that voice or maybe had a cold or something going on.

A professor of mine suggested that Reagan invaded Grenada to take everyone's attention off of the Beirut marine barracks bombing fiasco. That some of the forces used to invade Grenada were reinforcements on their way to Lebanon but were turned around. Reagan saves face by having a quick and easy victory.

Yes. It is pretty cool, isn't it? Can't figure out what it is, though.

I'm really loooking forward to this one. Clint Eastwood has so many great one-liners in this movie. I hope there is a deleted scene where Tom Highway beats the crap out of Roy Jennings. It has haunted me from the moment I saw it that he never cleaned Roy's clock.

I don't care for the cover. They should have put Clint smoking a cigar, drinking a Tecate or dressed for war with camoflauge on his face.

I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out. I enjoyed the first half of the movie, but felt the second half was pretty cheesy and unrealistic given the subject matter. I may revisit the movie with a rental.
