As a kid, I had heard that the turning of amplifiers, receivers on and off is what gives them a great deal of wear and tear, I have no facts behind this, but it is still something I do. My Onkyo TX-SR605 is always on, unless I go out of town. My Velodyne V-1012 sub is always on. Good or bad? Is this using a lot of wasted energy, or negligible?

I know that the common belief is that turning electronics on and off causes the most amount of wear and decreases the lifespan. Well, my receiver is approaching 10 years old and I turn it off (standby actually) whenever I am not using it. It still works fine. I turn my computer completely off before I go to bed. It's almost 5 years old, and works fine. I do leave my sub on, but it goes into standby after a short time. The only thing I see happening when you leave stuff on is that you generate a lot of heat and waste electricity. Excessive heat can cause its own problems, and I don't like the idea of paying for electricity I'm not using.

Why would you leave your sub on all the time? I have 2 powered subs and I turn them off after I am through watching a DVD/Blu-ray.

I'm glad you asked. Because I don't just use my home theater to watch blu-rays and DVD's only. I listen to the radio, I watch TV, I play Video games, I stream music, video, listen to cd's, mp3's ; and use it as the sound for my computer if I choose to use that connection.

Receivers have power supply boards. Power supply boards have capacitors. Capacitors have a limited life expectancy that varies by type, circuitry and environmental conditions. Leaving your receiver on all the time will lower its' life expectancy and at some point in time will result in board failure.

![]() I think I'll try to start putting my receiver in standby from now on. |
