Default Receiver On all of the time, or turn off?

As a kid, I had heard that the turning of amplifiers, receivers on and off is what gives them a great deal of wear and tear, I have no facts behind this, but it is still something I do. My Onkyo TX-SR605 is always on, unless I go out of town. My Velodyne V-1012 sub is always on. Good or bad? Is this using a lot of wasted energy, or negligible?

Are you talking about on or on standby? I leave mine on standby.

I leave my sub on 24/7 unless I;m going out of town for more then a few days. But I turn on/off my receiver with the TV. Not saying my practice is correct, just that is what I do.

I know that the common belief is that turning electronics on and off causes the most amount of wear and decreases the lifespan. Well, my receiver is approaching 10 years old and I turn it off (standby actually) whenever I am not using it. It still works fine. I turn my computer completely off before I go to bed. It's almost 5 years old, and works fine. I do leave my sub on, but it goes into standby after a short time. The only thing I see happening when you leave stuff on is that you generate a lot of heat and waste electricity. Excessive heat can cause its own problems, and I don't like the idea of paying for electricity I'm not using.

Why would you leave your sub on all the time? I have 2 powered subs and I turn them off after I am through watching a DVD/Blu-ray.

I'm glad you asked. Because I don't just use my home theater to watch blu-rays and DVD's only. I listen to the radio, I watch TV, I play Video games, I stream music, video, listen to cd's, mp3's ; and use it as the sound for my computer if I choose to use that connection.

I keep my components in standby mode when not in use. In your case, as long as it has proper ventilation I don't think the way you use it will hurt your receiver. You'll just end up paying more for your electric bill.

I keep mine in stand-by as well. Plus, if you use a Y-splitter, this will help to "wake up" the sub out of stand-by mode at slightly higher frequencies, thus improving the time the sub needs to become "active."

I keep mine (a 605 actually) in standby when I'm not using it. No use in using extra electricity.

Receivers have power supply boards. Power supply boards have capacitors. Capacitors have a limited life expectancy that varies by type, circuitry and environmental conditions. Leaving your receiver on all the time will lower its' life expectancy and at some point in time will result in board failure.

That is a good answer sir!

I think I'll try to start putting my receiver in standby from now on.
