Default Universal reconsidering stance in the format war?

http://n4g.com/industrynews/News-60901.aspx

Wouldnt that be cool if Universal shifted to neutral just after paramount goes exclusive.

That would be great... But I wonder about the source and the reliability of it... From reading the article and podcast, its more hearsay than concrete proof. I'll believe it when I see Bourne Trilogy on the shelves in Blu

That would be nice.....and it might just come true. I think that because Toshiba probably knew about this and if that were to happen HD DVD would definitely be on its last leg. So they went after Paramount, because a lot of places are saying they were paid off. They would need another studio to replace Universal, they can't rely solely on neutral studios.

Maybe that's whats going on?

I am very doubtful of this but if it is true, that's going to be very interesting.

Heh. Now that they don't have so much pressure as being the only DUD-exclusive studio, it will be easier to convince them to come over to the Blu side.

enjoy

I agree, but a lot I know. I predicted that Paramount would go BD exclusive!! I failed to factor in M$.

I actually had this on my mind as why MS paid Paramount to go exclusive, because Uni is about to go neutral and they needed something else. Only time shall tell.

Or talks broke down for the renewal. Or Microsoft decided they needed a studio that was making movies people wanted to buy.

If Universal go neutral, I will be ready with my dollars assuming they do not just do quick ports from HD DVD.

I want high quality AVC encodes and high quality audio.

If Universal goes neutral or BD for the factors you just mentioned, then they could start to make money. Spielberg could give them a go ahead for Back To The Future trilogy or Jurassic Park.

The very important KEY here is whether Toshiba and Warner have realized that Microsoft wants to destroy HD Media completely. If they do, then there is a chance that not even MS money can sway the patent holders of the technology.

Here's a theory. Universal wants the format war to continue(for some reason) but knows Blu-ray is better. Now that Paramount(idiots!) has switched Universal can release Blu-ray and profit from that while Paramount(idiots!) continues to the lengthen the war.

Universal might be thinking

"You gave them $150M? Give me more for my loyalty or else"

I think the BDA should throw some money at Warner & New Line. We gotta try and end this dual format BS once & for all.

I wonder that if this did in fact happen, which I seriously doubt given both Graffeo's and Korblau's recent statements, if they are going to be crappy transfers like a lot of Warner titles have been. I mean VC-1? WTF? If it does and Spielberg sees the sales numbers of Close Encounters maybe he'll have more of his titles up for release.

Microsoft is looking for its next prey as Universal's exclusivity contract is nearing the end.

I agree 100% with your statement. I will not be surprise if Universal goes neutral after the year is over. In fact, it think it is very likely to happen.

The Paramount deal does give Universal an out, as they have stated they want to keep the war.

I hope the BDA is working on getting them neutral or getting someone exclusive.

I just dont want to see another studio go exclusive HDDVD or even neutral from exclusive BD over money, while all we get is some announced Fox releases.
