USA Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs goes OOP

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be phasing out the regular Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Blu-ray release as they prepare to make a 3D Blu-ray release the standard version available.

The release will be bundled with Sony 3D televisions in June, but we have reason to believe that it will be available as a standalone Blu-ray release on the same day. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will be available in promotions and on sale starting June 22nd.

If that's the case, I wonder if we can expect a price drop on the original release? I'd love to add this to my library, but I need it at an affordable price point.

Same here, hopefully the "standard" release gets a price drop.

This'll probably be my first 3D BD purchase. I'll watch it in 2D until I get my Panny plasma.

But I held out on purchasing the 2D BD until the 3D BD is released.

The 3D version should've been on the original release to begin with. At least the disc would've had both the 2D and 3D versions of the movie like it is on the Coraline Blu-ray. I don't think I'm gonna double dip on the current release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. That's my opinion right there.

Isn't that a good thing? Wouldn't you rather pay the same price (im assuming it'll be the same) for a version that has optional 3D?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a difference between the 3-D versions in regular blu-rays and the 3-D versions in 3D Blu-rays?

I believe the Coraline blu-ray is just a 3-D version using regular high-def technology, so it can't be compared with something that will be released in 3D blu-ray, which is another format altogether.

That is, of course, unless I've gotten terribly confused with the whole 3-D thing, but I have Coraline and tried the 3-D version, on my regular blu-ray player, and it sort of works but not terribly great.

If 3D is optional then yeah no problem. I thought 3D was 3D only if it's not then that's cool two for the price of one.

You are correct. Coraline has the old style of 3D using the Red and Green glasses while the new style is the current technology with glasses and 3D Capable sets.

What I think people wanted is for those older movies which came out on 3D, it should have included the old style version of 3D. Though it probably will not be near as good as the new style.

The new release will have both 2D and 3D. No worries.

Yeah then I'd buy those, but if they are making people double dip on those, far from cool .

I watched a bit of this on demand and its actually pretty good.

The specs for Blu-Ray 3D were only finalized in December 2009. The 2D version of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs came out in January 2010. Discs take months to author and manufactur so a 3D version for the original release would have been impossible.

I think Sony is doing the right thing and Sony has proven themselves to be the only studio who gives a damn about 3D Blu-Rays success and are the only studio giving Blu-Ray 3D the proper support it needs to take off. Disney, Fox, and Dreamworks have snubbed Blu-Ray 3D in the worst ways possible and have been a huge dissipointment.

Yup. All 3D releases prior to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs are anaglyph based. Thus they can play on anyones equitment in 3D and require no new hardware but produce a shoddy 3D picture that horribley mutes the colors, severly reduces fine detail, and has severe ghosting. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is at the present the only release that uses 3D Full HD and delievers a separate 1080p video to each eye via active shutter glasses for a far superior 3D picture. The trade off is it requires expensive new hardware to get the 3D effect otherwise the disc will play in 2D only.

Since the new 3D version contains the regular 2D version as well, there's no reason to keep the old release in print.

except that the "new" both movie version will be a lot more expensive.
why do you think they are doing this?
it forces people to pony up.
all of the films that were 3D in the theater and that haven't gotten a true 3D bd release will most likely have this happen to them.
the prices of the 3D bds are ridiculous because they gotta squeeze all those dollars out of people.
the one I saw at my local BB was around $40.
this is certainly not a good development for people that have 0 plans to ever go 3D at home.

Let's face it, if you're going to buy non-sale items at Best Buy, chances are you're going to get sodomized by prices. But take a look at amazon... the regular bluray is $24.99, and the 3D version is $27.99. A $3 difference for a newer and better (arguable to some) technology is hardly a lot more expensive. And of course the prices are going to come down as it becomes the norm.

of course shopping at retail can be a lot more, but people still do it, and more than people like to admit.
blu-ray needs to be a lot more than some online product for it to continue to grow and prosper.
bottom line is that this all in one deal is not beneficial to many people, and more about money that about some benevolent act on the part of the studios.
for people that are ready to embrace 3D in the home it is a nice package deal;
for the rest of us it is not.
