Question What is the production cost for Blu-ray?

trying to fire back at the HD-DVD camp boys. They claim it costs 2 bucks a disc for production costs to studios vs. 0.50 cent per disc via HD-DVD...

are they using old numbers?

The difference isn't that much...

and if it were that's because it cost less to make crap.

Technically it is cheaper to make an HD-DVD disc... BUT it is cheaper PER GB to make a Blu-ray disc.

The actual difference is probably close to less than 2¢.

Not sure what you mean by that.

My understanding was that is was cheaper to make the discs since the process is closer to the current DVD process.

If it costs $0.50, it's because Microsoft is picking up the difference

Because they're approx the same cost for the discs, but it's 20GB more on BLu

You're talking about production lines: You can retool a DVD production line to HD while you need new machinery for BR

I heard that the licensing is where the major cost difference is. Word is that studios pay $6,000/year for unlimited use of HD-DUD licensing rights, but have to pay $8,000/title for Blu-ray licensing.

other than the fact that Dreamworks and Paramounts were paid in 150 mil, they say this was a factor... so, it just struck curiousity...

I know the blu-ray diode was extremely expensive in the beginning, but fell from somewhere around $125 to 10...

I saw a post before that showed a breakdown of a production company who could produce both. They were very close. I think once you got over 50,000 units, blu-ray was a little cheaper pre disc.

Regardless, I think any difference in disc prices are irrelevant since they do not appear to be significant.
