Default PS3 Production Cost Down 50%

Yeah, yeah, someone's already posted this (probably). But according to Gizmodo, Sony has reduced PS3 production costs by 50 percent since launch date.

Wow, it's still so expensive to produce. The US get's a really good deal compared to other nations. I guess we're lucky that a lot is produced here which reduces import and shipping costs.

The 40GB model still causes them to lose money? I wonder what the management team has ahead for the PS3 to make up for the lack of profit. I'm glad that the PS3 is getting more popular now. It was definately too advanced for the masses when it was first released but no it's just right. I hate how the Wii seems like a toy rather than a current-generation 2008 console.

They (Sony) do get money for game licensing. That's where they make the big bucks, not off the console hardware itself. Plus they knew this would help drive blu-ray, so I think they were willing to lose (just about) any amount on the PS3 at first.

Question What does it mean for PS3 future prices?

I know it may be too early to expect this, but hopefully Sony will have some room for future price cuts.

This fall and winter the PS3 really took off after the additional price cuts.

Then there are all those PS2 gamers out there that would like to jump in but haven't yet.

Very good point, I didn't think about that. Blu Ray's move into the standard format for HD here on out will make Sony a lot of money. Hopefully Sony will stop neglecting the PS3 now. I got the console nearly five months ago but I only have one game (Uncharted). I love that game a lot but there was a lack of selection for awhile.

And they do.

Or at least I thought all those people were having fun. They sure seem to act like it.
The difference is that the Wii would be considered a cheap toy and the PS3 would be considered a billionaire's toy (without the extreme costs). It's up there with exotic cars and yachts.

I guess it depends on what you will let yourself enjoy. I've had the PS3 for over a year. I've also allowed myself to enjoy 20+ games.
