United Kingdom Zodiac-Any differences to US DC?

I ask this because the US one has 2 discs whilst we only have one.

Also when I checked CinemaSquid the US disc had these stats:

Disc 1: 43.71/50 GB
Disc 2: 23.12/25 GB

Evidently we can't have 66.89GB on one disc so what's lost in transition? (Or does the transfer suffer?)

The transfers are a lower bit rate, thanks to Warner, but they look rather similar (I think the US one looks better).

The UK release only has Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, while the US release is Lossless.

The US release has DolbyTrueHD, while the UK version has lossy only.

Also the 2nd disc for the US version has most (can't remember if it's all of them) special features in HD. I doubt the UK one has them in HD (although haven't checked myself).

Yeah the UK ones are all in HD. I've watched them all. Excellent extras.

Try having a look at this comparison done by DVDBeaver. Despite the great slipbox the UK version got, I still got the US edition for the higher picture and video quality.

Yes. Warner handled distribution for the movie outside the US and Canada, so all versions by Warner are the same (give or take the different audio tracks and subtitles).

For this release go for the USA over the UK. (This is a title I'll be blind buying.)
Zodiac
International (Warner) - Low bitrate VC-1, DD 5.1 (lossy), SD extras, Region Free
US (Paramount) - High bitrate AVC, 24bit TrueHD, HD extras (2nd disc), Region Free.

Thought I'd revive this thread. So are the UK extras in SD or HD since we've had conflicting facts from posters in this very thread alone?

The UK release is on Amazon right now for £7.25 which is a great price, and would it be fair to say it will also come with the slipbox? I've never seen it without the slipbox as it's usually completely sealed (over the slipbox too).

Thanks.

I think the 40 minute Making Of is the only doc not in HD. It still comes with a slipbox from what i heard, but you can always e-mail Amazon about it.

Brilliant film but if you can, get the US Blu Ray.

Thanks. I'll just pick up the UK version. I'm not a fan of having different sized cases in my collection unless it's for things like Steelbooks or Collectors Edition boxes. Not to mention I don't like the large holes in the back of US slipcovers.

It still comes in it's slipcase, I had mine this week from Amazon. As I've mentioned in the past I don't think you'll get it without the case as the cover is completely different they'd have to re-issue it and redo the cover.

I should have done my homework first it wasn't until mine arrived that I read about the differences between the Warners release and the Paramount release.

According to the DVDBeaver review all the extras are in HD though only difference is that the UK extras are on the movie disc and the US ones on a 2nd disc.

I can only see nominal difference in the screen grabs whether you notice a lot more in motion I don't know. I think when I get round to watching I'll pretend it's a DVD!

I don't personally mind saving some room, but yes, good idea. The US Blu Ray is actually pretty expensive, but it has better picture and better sound, so there's both pros and cons. The UK version still looks damn good though!

Thanks for the reply guys, I really do appreciate it. I honestly wasn't expecting any replies soon, what with the Zodiac thread not having much interest initially anyway and the release of the Tron DMR cover garnering attention away, but it's nice for you guys to help me out.

Thanks. I think I'll make the order now, who can argue with £7.25 right?

I think it's easier than trying to find the DVD of the Directo's Cut! Shame abouth the huge differences though between the Paramount and Warners releases. It's the second time I've been burnt this week with BD's with Monsters been the other.

On the DVD front I ordered Once Upon A Time In The West and it came with a horrible cover nothing like the Digipak I've seen previously!

I managed to buy the Once Upon a Time in the West digipack about a year ago from Ebay for about £3-4. Awesome package to be honest.

Can't wait for my German Limited Edition Blu-ray set to arrive, it is truly epic!

Received my Zodiac this morning from Amazon and it does indeed have the slipbox. What's interesting though is the Blu-ray case artwork is now exactly the same as the slipbox, which leads me to think they're soon going to stop producing the slipboxes. However, the inner artwork of the Blu-ray case look identical to that of the originals with the white background and envelope style design. I'll have a fiddle about with it, but it may even simply be the case of they have the Blu-ray case artwork backwards, or always have, I don't know it's a bit strange.

For those with outer white artwork for the Blu-ray case, what does the artwork look like on the inside when you open the case up?

I'm chuffed to bits I've received the slipbox in perfect condition, I'm just very intrigued by these differences that's all.

EDIT: Just checked it out, the artwork for Zodiac's Blu-ray case is definitely reversible! I've just flipped it round and got the white envelope cover on the outside now, complete with spine, ratings and specifications etc on the back. I can always just flip it back should I ever want the envelope to be on the inside of the case when I open it. I'm highly impressed.

For those interested I did a review of the Australian release which is also Warner Bros (the same disc as the UK). Head on over the the Australian thread to check it out. Includes review, some screenshots and BDInfo scan details.

Although the audio is an issue for me the PQ is very strong considering the bit-rate it's afforded. If you can't get the US release then the UK one is definitely still not something to ignore - it's a great film, the PQ is fine and the special features are some of the most enjoyable I've watched.

Just had a quick look through the review and thread, and it's great, well done. It's a shame we don't get many, if any, like that here in the UK pages.

I've only done a few reviews myself, and I've tried to be comprehensive without being overly technical as a lot of the technical details are already available to see on the database. There's a huge lack of reviews for the UK Blu-ray database here, so I'll be continuing to contribute reviews, but I haven't done one in over a week or so.

I'll probably next review the Karate Kid Steelbook, and maybe How The West Was Won as I aim to watch that in the coming days.
