Default Toshiba only has 55% YTD Standalone share

Toshiba's response to the Sony claims:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh..._Dominance/943

Pretty sad numbers from Toshiba considering the price gap.

As I wrote in that other forum, I was very surprised at the YTD number. With such a large delta in pricing, I was expecting that standalone BD players were being slaughtered and that it's all PS3 doing the heavy lifting.

Seeing 70:30 and 80:20 were the previous monthly numbers, the 55:42 is a big surprise to me. In fact I'd say if it wasn't released from Toshiba, I would have thought it's more creative statistics by the blu marketroids.

This is to be expected as there are already several brands of Blu-ray Disc players on the market. There's quite a number of BD players on the way including major brands like Panasonic, JVC, LG, Samsung and more.

Now, for the HD DVD players... Toshiba... um... Toshiba... err... Toshiba... oh yeah... Venturer but who's going to carry that one?

Hmm-mm, now you can see why BD players are on the rise. It's because there are more players to pick from.

So does this mean using HD DVD math, Blu is only behind by 6 1/2% points.

Considering the price gap between players, and they only have 55% of the market share in players? I think Toshiba is losing ground in the HD-DVD market share.

And if blu-ray has 42% for stand-alone...add in Sony's PS3...yeah...I don't think HD-DVD has a chance.

What it means is simple...

Price is, for the most part, irrelevant right now given the type of consumers buying.

It also means...

Toshiba is hemorrhaging cash trying to keep the 'price advantage' alive when, in fact, it doesn't matter. Waste of dollars that could be used to make a profitable product sell instead.

Blu-ray manufacturers are doing something no HDDVD manufacturers are doing... Making money.

Any market can never be claimed to be dominated when you only have a 13 percent market share lead on 3 month old data. With the price differences and the shrinking market share lead HD-DUD supporters are going to be forced to open their eyes. And if we add in the PS3 wouldn't that market share already show that Blu has a commanding lead around 85:15 ( complete guesstamite ). Its like watching something die, you know its doomed but it just keeps crawling further off the road. If only i could shoot it and end Hd-DUD's misery.

i don't understand why HD-DVD group won't include sales of the PS3 in their figures. Some people buy the PS3 just for the blu-ray, they could care less for the games, but it's a bonus i guess

That is a pathetic showing for HD, and sort of puts to rest that the lowest price wins with hardware. Seems as if BD prices have hit a "sweet spot" where consumers will buy from known manufacturers.

Because

1. It makes them look bad in terms of audience/install base
2. It highlights the obvious - blu-ray discs being produced for games - which is in the millions and millions more than HD-DVD discs being produced and sold. Which leads to lowering production costs at a faster rate.
3. MS doesn't want any mention of the PS3 unless they can spin it as a negative.

They do include the PS3 in the figures that appear to help the HD-DVD case. Their attach rates number includes PS3s. I do hope that when the holidays roll around, all those PS3 owners will buy an 1080/24p capable TV and copies of Cars and Ratatouille on Blu!

i consider i got my game console free, all I had to do was buy the cheapest Blu-Ray player at the time. It was a bonus. I got 2 awesome things in one awesome sleek package. Like buying a Porsche and getting a leggy blonde to go with it.

Did nobody else notice that they quote July's NPD numbers to refute Sony's claim using the most recent NPD numbers?

July data from NPD probably only shows sales up to like late June or maybe early July at best.

Sigh...

Funny how Toshiba sited YTD data, and not the data from the last 12 weeks that Sony was referring to. Gee... I wonder what the data from the last 12 weeks must indicate...

If this figure is true, it's actually pretty sad and pathetic for the HD-DVD camp because the figure only reveals the commitment of blu-ray owners when you factor in BD is outselling HD-DVD 2:1. Granted the PS3 is helping boost this figure, but it's not like there aren't 360 owners out there who don't also have the add-on HD-DVD player. 55% is measly in this light, and it only makes me believe more that I wisely invested my money in Blu-ray.

Default HD-DEAD Losing Ground by Own Account

While Toshiba is now claiming to have a 55% market share based on July numbers, they were claiming a 60% market share back in June of this year. SO, by there own account, they LOST 5% market share between June and July. HA.

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070611/aqm077.html?.v=9

If they continued to lose 5% share a month, they should be gone by this time next year, let's hope so.

People just have to keep buying players... the glut of new ones should help!

Eventually the numbers could be so bad for HD DVD that it'll be impossible for them to spin them in a logical fashion...
