Default Alan Bell's (Paramount) "Production Problems" on BD

Maybe someone can ask him about this...looks like maybe HD DVD has "production problems" too?

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...ver_HD_DVD/947

Maybe the $150MM can smooth all of this out though...

i thought blu-ray was about production costs, not production problems. what paramount just did to SNF hd dvd is exactly what happened before they dropped blu-ray, they delayed jack ryan indefinately, zodiac indefinately. could pararmount think about just leaving the hd industry all together, could the bda have offered them "an offer they can't refuse" (pun intended), or could they just be having problems.

Its funny how no other studio has mentioned a problem with release scheduling.

This guy is full of it.

He has ignored the market (which is buying Blu) and has ignored his customers (who were buying more Blu).

Its like a car dealer switching from BMW to Chevy and saying its because chevy costs less. But his customers want BMW.

This guy made a bad decision and he is trying to rationalize his bad decision.

He is trying to save his job, which is in jeopardy in the future.

His decision was based on the $150m payoff and nothing more. This guy sold out his customers for 150m. He is sad

yep, im beginning to think paramount realized they made a big mistake. i bet the hd dvd camp told them about all the cheap players flooding the markets, how great hd dvd standalone sales were, how they really thought they could overtake BD software sales, and how this would just be more fuel to the fire to burn blu-ray. then CEDIA came, blu-ray players are now outselling hd dvd players, the ventrurer will not be sold at the nation's biggest retailer, Wal Mart, depsite blu-ray having zero releases and hd dvd having heroes and BoG, hd dvd still lost by a fairly big margin. and para***** is looking at this and realizing they got suckered. then this guy is just trying to explain his a$$.

I agree but at the same time when i go into my local Best Buy they do say Hd sales have risen since before it was ALL blu-ray. While they still are behind they added a boost but they are idiots thinking they would make more money in sales with them since their are FAR more supporters in blu-ray. THINK of how many ps3 users would've bought Transformer! My guess a lot. IDIOTS, probably didn't think about that now did they. Look at 300 still up there (a lot of ps3 owners bought that one).

FUD-flash: Transformers on HD-DVD to have 'production problems! Paramount exec: All bets are off!

More FUD: If it can happen to Saturday Night Fever it can happen to Transformers! No one with a HD-DVD player is safe!

paramount: we do
hd dvd: awww! you suck guys
paramount: we assume the check is in the mail for the 150 million
hd dvd: no hd dvd, no money!
paramont: that wasn't the deal, the deal was no blu-ray we get money, nothing ever said we had to support hd dvd.

Saturday Night Fever (scheduled for the 18th) has been postponed also.

According to Paramount, the added production costs of Blu-Ray were in hiring a Java programmer for BD-J discs.

Talking about added costs, Paramount stated if they run out of space on HD-DVD discs they will send out two discs or compress the data further. The spokesman went on to say HD-DVD would have 45 GB discs coming out. Blu-Ray was criticized for not being finalized as a format. One last piece of "huh?" was his reference to early adopters, "they're our most valuable customers in launching a new format." Don't we all feel special?

I think that it's funny that, in an ad for an HDDVD production studio/movie..there is an ad for a Sony BluRay player.

I think he must have meant the early early adopters.

Does anyone have a clue what Paramount would have to payout in breach of contract, if they started manufacturing Blu-rays again?

They don't usually postpone titles indefinitely if production is going well.
