Default best way for blu-ray to win

I believe the best way for blu-ray to win is for the movie studios supporting blu-ray to offer a mail in rebate to get a couple of free movies. Buy a player have a mail-in rebate for 2 or 3 movies from the studios supporting blu-ray. This would make all the hd dvd fans reconsider the cheaper price of the hd dvd players. The studios supporting blu-ray would quickly make their money back having more people with blu-ray players to market/sell to. what do ya think?

Could appear desperate. The cost of the movies is essentially the same on both formats, but your point is well taken: There need to be some very solid inticement, to be sure.

It's just like Sony is going to have a real battle on their hands convincing gamers and the like to spend AT LEAST an extra $100 on hardware for their PS3 over the Xbox360.

It wouldn't surprise me. Even now, in regular DVD's, we always see simillar gimmicks, although for entirely free movies.

Believe me: They won't.

That won't be easy for Sony...

Default I think the idea is

that the Blu-ray Disk players are more expensive, the movies are not. Therefore to offset the cost of the player the studios should offer a couple free movies when you buy a player.

Assuming the typical low end HD-DVD player is $100 to $200 less expensive than the typical low end Blu-ray Disk player -- without any incentive or obvious benefits of the BD player over the HD-DVD player there will be a high percentage of consumers which will buy the cheaper player.

If, on the other hand, the BD player came with coupons for 2 or 3 free BD movies then the perception changes. The consumer can buy an HD-DVD player *and* three movies for about the same price as buying a BD player and getting to choose any 3 movies to take along with it.

So long as this is *NOT* done with mail in rebates (i.e., the consumer buys and pays for the movies and then mails in the proof of purchase along with some forms found in the box) as mail in rebates almost always are very consumer unfriendly!

The additional free movies will cost the studios virtually nothing and it almost guarantees that the consumer will buy more (or at the very least rent more) once they get used to the experience of 1080p movies on their home set.

Everyone wins.

I disagree. When DVD was just beginning Warner and Sony worked together and offered those buying a DVD player a mail-in form offering five free DVD movies. Granted the studios decided what these titles were but it was great promotion IMO. I think doing this again with Blu-ray would make good business sense. If any of the HD DVD fanboys thought this act looked desperate well they'd be clueless as usual wouldn't they?

a) just because mail-in rebates are the work of the devil doesn't mean they're not enticing. a couple years back i was sold on a particular dvd burner because it had like a hundred dollar mail-in rebate, which is a fair chunk of change to get back. so i bought the dvd burner and then just never filled out the damn form. on the other hand, i did receive my 8 dollars back from alliance atlantis when i sent them a proof of purchase from both the regular and extended editions of fellowship of the ring. so i guess i'm only down 92 dollars. or at least that's what i'll tell myself.

b) forget virtually nothing, seeing as sony itself is a movie studio it pretty much would cost them nothing. i think a shrewd move on their part would be to include "spider-man 2" and other sequel titles. not only could they use some of their more effects-heavy films to sell the advantages of blu-ray, but they would also come close to ensuring the sale of the original titles, as well. i.e. "spider-man"
