Default why LINUX was a great choice for the PS3

well it's now OPEN...

This was just ONE of the reasons why it was a great choice to use linux FOR THE PLAYSTATION 3

want software go here:

if your PS3 has any of the 2 OS's
fedora
ubuntu

AND more DISTROS will be added in the future....

CNR installations: 8,469,349

just some software that is downloadable to the PS3....
enjoy...

I'm a total Linux noob
Does it have files icons like Windows?
can you easily copy/paste files?
can you choose which icons appear on the desk?
can you right click on an icon to have options like Windows? (or other system to delete, have properties ...)
can you switch to the XMB easily?

It's been a while for me...while completing my physics degree, I was the System Admin for our Physics computer lab in college, which was all Linux. I really want to put Linux on mine, but I heard there has been driver issues in the past, is there a tutorial site that maybe recommends the best Linux type to install?

here is a few sites:

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html

http://www.Ubuntu.com

VIDEO of the following:

Fedora Linux on PS3 w/ Voiceover

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZXcuhJkwx4

I would In my Opinion go with Ubuntu, or FEDORA for the Playstation 3 ASIDE FROM Yellow DOG. ALL (3) are good. but for Ubuntu, and FEDORA at
www.cnr.com
has software that can be loaded onto the playstation 3 with just a click of the mouse. because while you are running FEDORA or Ubuntu you can click an run the program. that means it downloads to the right place in the HARDDRIVE
where that program should go : ie: if its a game it will load into the the GAMES FOLDER. Now this site is on going development and is in constant updateing so its a good thing for new software.

well to answer yes to all. except for the red highlighted they do now do all of those thing's for the GUI based LINUX distros...there are command only LINUX but most have gone GUI and the supported GUI are getting easy to operate as any windows based PC. a great DISTRO for ease of use is THE ONES THEY LISTED FOR SUPPORT..Ubuntu,opensuse, FREESPIRE , AND LINSPIRE are VERY EASY TO USE...Freespire is as it says FREE.. , YOU CAN try it out now for free. there is no freespire that can be loaded onto the PS3 ..yet sadly... but if you have and old PII- to -PIII WITH 256MB of ram and a 4 GB hard drive freespire is perfect to try out. Linspire is the same as freespire but with more tech support OPTIONS without going to the forums and asking people for help.

LINSPIRE IS CHEAP less than $60.00 for full distro. the OS has many thing's you as a windows user are use to operating you computer with with WINDOWS. freespire is the same it just does not get the SUPPORT options that come with the os. those were stripped out..that is why the OS is free
. but it over all is the same.

if you go to :
www.linspire.com

you can get info about the OS...
the same with Ubuntu
www.ubuntu.com

there is even help on their forums and most of the users are glad to help

Joe,

Here is a heck of a question for you, I had loaded both the free version of YDL, and Fedora on my PS3 back in January/February of this year. Neather had very good video drivers for the PS3, and had fairly low resolution... how are the video drivers doing now? Has anyone in the linux development community cracked the code of how to get better performance (ie 720 or better) out of the PS3 GPU (really only one of the cell processors) without having to buy the YDL subscription?

Fedora is close but till requires a lot of command line stuff that makes the dos prompt look like kiddie stuff.

I have not tried ubbunto, but i did use SUSE 10.1 for a while on one of my PCs (not PS3), It's probably the closest to Windows and noob freindly linux i have tried. I recently installed 10.2 on a virtual machine for study. You can pretty much use it with out ever using the Shell (linux's command prompt). Pretty much everything to do basic computing is included out of box so to speak (there is no box it's a free ISO you download and burn your self). To add media, disc burning, and other cool stuf is as easy as finding repositories through google or forums, then placing the url in YAST (sort of windows update, but better, because you can download apps and stuff), then let it do the hard work for you.

But alas I need windows to study for my MCSE. Only IT pros with 5 years exp can monkey with the Unix or Linux based servers, they are 100% command line driven save some Linux packages, but still command heavy. entry level IT is stuck fixing Windows and dealling with noobs.

Completely disagree.... you need not hit the command line unless you want to do something "creative"

Stick with pre-compiled software, and all is GUI, at least it was when I loaded Fedora Core 5 "Zod" and Ubuntu "feisty faun" on the PC. When I loaded Fedora, the only available PPC distro was Core 5 (Bordeaux)... Is Core 7 - Moonshine out for PS3?

Joeorc... what version of ubuntu is compiled for PPC and available for the PS3?
