Sony Pictures Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

link:

http://www.dvdfile.com/index.php?opt...=6265&Itemid=3

Video:

"The film’s theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1 is presented in a satisfying high definition transfer compressed with the AVC video CODEC. Color rendition and finely grained textures are impressive, most obvious in the lavish kimonos. Flesh tones are quite natural, indicating accurate hue. Small object detail is also excellent; long shots of Sayuri walking with the Chairman clearly reveal facial expressions despite their very small sizes onscreen"

"This is a lavish, richly detailed production that strives to portray the environment of ‘30s and ‘40s Japan, and that visual density shines through.

Audio:

VERY SIMPLE IS STRIKING

"The surround channels are surprisingly active, immersing the viewer in crowd noises, rain, impressive thunder. . . During the World War II period, numerous flyovers from front to back and side to side behind the viewer punctuate the mix"

That feature sounds similar to what Fox had on Speed.

I ought to slap you.

Memoirs was an excellent film. Of course, I love the culture and those films, so I could be biased.

Memoirs had beautiful visuals and dances, but I don't think it as accurate a reflection of the culture as the films of Kenji Mizoguchi which are much more authentic. Check out:

Gion Bayashi
Gion No Shimai

not to mention his other greats like:

Sanshô dayû
Chikamatsu monogatari
Ugetsu monogatari
etc. etc.

IMO Memoirs was a good film, not great, though it had great sets, costumes, lighting, etc.

I agree with this. It may not be 100% accurate but it sure is better than many others that portray geishas as high-ranked call girls.

And the movie is beautiful. In so many ways.

enjoy

There's only 1 user review of the movie and was wondering if anyone else had seen it and what they thought of it. Is it worth seeing once, twice, several times? tia

Not sure if I'd call it a chick flick, but now that I think back I suppose it is. And not sure I want to see it again. It was okay, but I was expecting more...

(Kind of like Chocolat in that I expected subtitled movie but ended up with English speaking going on. Similar feeling about both.)

[I think I got it cheap on blu-ray, so probably will get to it again at some point, but not high on my list...]

Curse Of The Golden Flower was more satisfying, might want to try that one on for size first. (Or, with apparent caveat regarding PQ (I've not seen the blu-ray), House Of Flying Daggers was pretty good too, probably the best of the three.)

Tia,

You will really enjoy this movie. I saw it with my wife and I thought it was a very tolerable chick flick that looked and sounded spectacular on Blu-Ray. Women like it because of the love story aspect to it.

I thought it was a bit slow and dry. Also, being an Asian-American, I could not stand the fact that they lumped Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean & Japanese actors in a Japanese film - despite the deep political rifts b/t the cultures and based on the story of the movie.

It is not a bad movie, parts are great and parts are slow.
PQ is definitely better than average but not quite top shelf .
Good addition to a collection.

I wouldn't say it's a chick flick, but it's not an action flick to be sure. Some beautiful cinematography that looks great on blu and a solid all around film.
