If you use the hdmi with the player, or even w/ componet, I have noticed that a good majority of the hd movies on hbo hd or basic hd channels that there are no bars. Some movies in hd on hbo like bram stoker's dracula have the bars oh the screen, while some like Matrix revoloutions doesn't have the bars. I can do the zoom or wide zoom to get rid of the bars, but I'm afraid I'm losing some of the picture. I just hope that the movies on blu-ray will fill the 16x9 screen without having to change the aspect on the tv does anyone have any info?

To my knowledge all BDs will be OAR. Meaning that movies with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will have black bars on a 16:9 TV. Whether or not the BD players will allow you to zoom the 2.35:1 image to 16:9 I don't know. If they do allow for the zooming you will indeed lose part of the picture. FWIW, I am 100% behind OAR and have zero problems with black bars. I would be pissed if the BD discs themselves were all cropped to 16:9.

I know about the changes in aspect ratio, but I wonder why?
Why change the aspect ratio of movies? ![]() |

but what is the point of having a 16x9 tv if you are still going to have the bars, when I watched the matrix it was awesome to have a full hd image, like monday night football. If that is the case they should have made the hd tv's different so it could fill the screen I hate bars

Well most movies are filmed at 1.85:1 which is practically 16:9 but some are 2.35:1. The black bars on those films are small and are needed in order to protect OAR. If TVs were sized at 2.35:1 then all of the 1.85:1 movies would have to have black bars on the sides of the image. In short, as long as multiple aspect ratios are used you're going to have black bars on some movies. I can't help but to ask if you care about a director's intention. I do and thus I want OAR whether that means black bars or not.
