I was looking at the new catalog releases at the local Hastings yesterday (I've got my eye on the new Cujo SE), and started wondering - what in the heck happened to Lions Gate catalog releases? They've still got a few blockbusters left in their library, like the Rambo sequels, The Running Man, etc, and while they started out with wave after wave of catalog titles, the closest we've come lately is "Waiting", which is only a couple of years old.
This made me start wondering where in the heck the big Bruckheimer titles were at (like The Rock, Con Air, Crimson Tide, etc), and I started wondering if the rumor that ran quite a while back that Disney was holding off on a lot of catalog titles since they weren't selling well was true, and if Lions Gate had also adopted this philosophy. I'm not trying to spread the dreaded FUD, but it does have me worried. My interests in Blu and HD have always leaned more towards catalog titles, in fact the last five titles I bought were the Anchro Bay releases and Deliverance. |

You are going to have to wait a little longer for Disney's catalog titles. Some will be released next year, and they have already been annouced. |

Wouldn't blame them. Catalogue titles haven't been selling so good on either format. They won't win the format war. One some important catalogue titles like Star Wars or LotR might do a real impact. Many people thought that The Matrix-movies should be big sellers but the three Matrix-movies together have in revenue sold 30% less than Casino Royale for example.
Day-and-dates are what sell absolutely the most. Most energy should be put in these titles with some important catalogue titles to fill up between the day-and-dates. |

Remember -- Disney basically did the same thing with DVD. Oddly (quite possibly because they were under the care of Eisner and not Iger at the time), they were VERY hesitant to release anything on DVD during the first few years. Not only that, but the widescreen releases weren't anamorphic, there was no animation released (except for ONE Beauty and the Beast sequel), and special features were near non-existant. Oldest titles were usually the biggest of the 80s movies (TRON -- I want that on BD! Got the LD box set, the original DVD, the anniversary DVD, the UMD, need the movie again!). Anything older or more obscure had to be released through Anchor Bay (who was bound by the anamorphic ban, but made up in great packaging and bonuses occasionally). Disney is doing a LOT better this time around. Instead of taking the backwards steps and fearing a new format, they're completely embracing it, even more than Sony sometimes.
There's just no financial basis for releasing the old titles on Blu-Ray yet when they're too widely available on DVD. We know that Sleeping Beauty will be the first classic animated movie release (probably the first pre-Touchstone release, actually). Sleeping Beauty is also not currently available on DVD (on moratorium status), so that's another plus. I'd expect to see the biggest of the big before anything else -- Mary Poppins and the like. And hopefully we can see a great Roger Rabbit release soon, too. ![]() |

![]() The title surge for the rest of this year is pretty huge. It may be Disney simply decided to wait until after the holidays to have some key catalog titles to release in Q1. But, for sure, if a lack of sales is causing them to re-think, what must Universal be thinking about now? Gary |
