Default Lionsgate reacquires Republic catalog from Paramount

See See Late Flashes

This issue is just amazing, and this magazine is a heck of a resource.

I didn't see anything in there about Lionsgate. That section just had something about the Amazon sale and the Universal campaign in Europe.

What as the impact of the Lionsgate deal?

I would imagine it would be that for this forum's members, that Republic titles would be BD exclusives instead of on both formats?

It's in "For the record" and is an errata for a previous article.

... it should be noted that Lionsgate re-acquisition of the Republic library from Paramount Pictures did not include the public domain titles.
And odd thing to have to clarify. But, there you go.

The impact is that Lionsgate is a BD exclusive studio. Paramount is a lacklustre (for both formats) neutral studio.

Well I guess I have to clarify. I am not an insider and have no idea what the "Republic library" is. Is this a big library, a small library, does it have big titles we want, does it have anime, etc... I realize this means these titles will likely be BR exclusive but please dumb it down for me so I can understand the relevance of this library going BR.

I see you have a generational gap to explain to, Gary!

Hehehe, maybe not generational so much as experience. I was an average joe until last August when I got my first HD set to watch football. I loved it so much I wanted movies in HD and learned about BR at that time. Got a PS3 at launch and became even more hooked. I'm just trying to learn all I can at this point so if this forum isn't the place for newbs like me, I guess I'll find another place. I guess I could check out AVS, I hear they're pretty receptive to BR folks over there

Wasn't "Highlander" released by Republic?

Well, I view it as bad news since Paramount did a *beautiful* job with "It's A Wonderful Life" and there are several Republic titles that badly need remastering such as "The Quiet Man". I'm not sure if Lionsgate would put the same effort in transferring them as Paramount would. Sure they were slow, but the final product was stellar.
