so was i but after 3 days of having it the 1730 came out so felt a bit miffed...Dell agreed to upgrade me , for a £1000 tag ofcourse...

i just hope i enjoy the films on it....

Saw some blueray films on a sony vaio today and the quality of fringeing on it was terrible , every white post or white picket fence had purple lines running down it..I was not impressed....and i also noticed that different movies had better or worse quality!!

What in your opinion would be a good film to preview bd on it!!??

panasonic uj-215 is slot loading and does not have tray.
as you said in your PM, your computer does not have HDMI port (only DVI), and your TV support HDCP (labeled HD ready).
just buy a HDMI cable, and DVI to HDMI converter

I'm using Sony VAIO VGN-FZ18G to watch blu-ray movies and the picture quality is superb (thanks to the ultra-bright, vivid LCD screen with 90% color reproduction)! Now here comes the question, do u think our notebook's blu-ray drive is capable of supporting the playback of AVC & VCI video codec at high bit rate (e.g. 49 Mbps AVC in "Day After Tomorrow" blu-ray)? Also, will the drive support the reading of BD+ titles? If someone can play "day after tomorrow" and "fantastic four: rise of the silver surfer" blu-ray discs on their notebook's blu-ray drive, let me know.

The sony was only a 15.4inch if i remember and the processor was the t7300 which surprised me as i keep getting informed t7600 was the minimum spec for blueray....it was a shop demo model and may have been an early model to be honest......the disc was showing ultraviolet and a nights tale...

I love action films and am also really excited about planet earth as i am hoping the quality will be fantastic due to the nature of the subject....

The processor of the Sony notebook is T7500 and it's powerful enough ... to me and blu-ray, heheh!

Your notebook looks very similar to mine. Have u tried playing "Day after Tomorrow" & "Fantastic 4: Rise of Silver Surfer" blu-ray discs using this notebook? Any problem? Dying to know. Can it support BD+?

I wish i got that intel extreme in xps1730, but I am HP fans. They offer it too, but only in the USA. I'll stick with HP.

I just recieved my new laptop from Sony yesterday, the Vaio VGN-AR570. It has a Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz, 17in 1080p screen, 4gigs of memory, 500gb hard drive, Blu-ray recordable drive and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 1024gb. This thing rocks. I would recomend this to anyone.

I'd love to buy it. but overpriced. I am buying (exactly a month from today) HP Pavilion HDX9095EA, 20 inch, T7500 2.2 GHz, 1050p (1680x1050), 400GB, 2GB, Ati mobility radeon 2600XT, and HD DVD....
I don't like ATi and HD DVD, but seems I got no choice.
Some said that this version of Ati consume less than nvidia and run quieter.
I bought BD-RE drive to replace that inferior HD DVD. I plan to make a video when I did this and throwing it to the rubbish bin. I'll put it to youtube.

Who informed you of this? This is a VGN-AR190G - T2500(Core Duo @ 2.0GHz)
Newest BD I have played is Wild Hogs. Played fine! All of my BDs play fine.

T7600 as minimum or is it the T7300?

Whomever told you that the minimum is T7600 is wrong.
Great if you get one, more power!
I believe that 2.0 GHz Dual core is the lowest "Recommended" speed processor, whereas the bare minimum is the T2400 @ 1.83GHz

Default Blu-Ray Drive for a 1710...

Does anyone know of a part number or way to buy a blu-ray drive for my XPS 1710? I can't seem to find one from Dell that will sell to upgrade my DVD drive. Any thoughts or recommendations?
