Default The end of the First Gen players ?

Here in Oz the new PS3 40Gb is about to be released (11th Oct).

As somebody who bought the Samsung BD-P1000 - and is starting to get a bit fed up with Spiderman 3 being reloaded 6 times before it will successfully play - I am very tempted to pickup the new 40Gb even though the specs are lower, it is pretty cheap for a Blu-ray player that also plays PS3 games

Just wondered who else is thinking of trading up (?) from a stand-alone first gen player to this PS3 model ?

Or shall we all wait for the magic firmware upgrade from Samsung

I'd go with any PS3 whether it's the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB or whateverGB version over the Sammy BD-P1000 any day. But, that's just me.

That player was rushed to the market and is full of problems that no amount of firmware updates will ever fix. Do yourself a favor and get a PS3 instead, with that price to feature ration you just can't go wrong.

Same here. I hated the Sammy BD-P1000 and firmware never helped. I finally returned it and got the PS3 and it has played every movie I have ever put in it with fast load times.

I had the BD-P1000, but even if I didn't I would consider the PS3 the best player to get for most people who don't have a problem with their player also being able to do other things like playing games and downloading trailers and other content, and don't mind the Bluetooth remote (I prefer it and like that I don't have to worry about where I point it, personally). Besides being fast and doing the 1080p24 correctly, I figure discs will have to be tested on the PS3 and if there is a problem playing them on a PS3 it will get the highest priority, since that will be the most common Blu-ray player (at least until something comes along to dethrone that). And I figure Sony will have to keep it current through firmware updates for at least a few years, where with standalones companies have an incentive to get you to move to their latest generation, with shorter generations.

In short, there isn't any player out there I would take in exchange for one of my PS3s (I have 2 of them). I even think the PS3 is a better player than my XA2 (top of the line HD DVD player). Besides feeling more responsive, the PS3 does 1080p24 correctly, while the XA2 does it incorrectly (1080p24 is just shorthand as 1080p23.976 is the correct value, while the XA2 does it at the incorrect value of exactly 24 which forces an inconsistency from what is mastered on the discs at the rate for most film). I don't really use the DVD upscaling much at all, but the XA2 does have a good chip for that. But I still consider the PS3 to be a better player.

Hopefully all of the CEs will get their act together for 2008.

Thanks all. It sounds like I will be getting a new shiny (matt) black (silver) 40Gb (upgradable to 200gb) Ps3 for Christmas then

Unless Samsung pull out all the stops and release a fast loading / BD-J update. The only short fall of the PS3 choice is that you cannot easily (i.e. remote) hack for multiregion DVD playback.

Oh well - let's see what happens from Samsung and from Bonus Time at work
