Default Opinions needed!

Thanks for reading. I just bought a PS3 a few weeks ago. I have a question about blu ray. My 50 inch plasma only out puts 1080i A 1080p set is a year away. Here is my question that I have asked before on different sites but could not get an answer.

Does a blu ray movie look "better" at 1080i than a regular Dvd upconverted to 1080i?

On a side note the blu ray promos look incredible on my set.

Thanks for your help.

Don´t think about 1080i doesn´t look good, it looks AMAZING!

Blu-ray looks definitely better than a DVD...by far

Your plasma doesn't "ouput" 1080i, it "inputs" and is capable of show a max resolution 1080i. Why is a 50" 1080p plasma a year away? I have one.

Yes a blu-ray at 1080i looks better than an upconverted dvd at 1080i. The secret is in the discs. A dvd has a max resolution of 480p, all an upconverter does is deinterlace it to a 1080i picture. It chops ip up over and over, granted this does look good but it still isn't perfect. A blu-ray disc can carry a full 1080i resolution. A blu-ray will look better than an upconverted dvd.

Default 1080i

You have a 1080i tv or a 1080i input???? For most tvs(ones that don't do 24hz), even if you have a 1080p input, the signal needs to be deinterlaced to 1080i to do to the 2:3 pulldown needed for film at 60hz. Basically, it will look just as good as 1080p. Good Bluray will look >>>>>>>> then upconverted DVD on your tv, so don't worry. DVD sucks.

Thanks... and now it makes sense to start my blu ray collection. By a year away I meant from my pocket book.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.

I wasn't completely sure how much better BD looked on a 1080i compared to DVD upconvert...then I placed a DVD version of Open Season in the player and then put in the BD version...the BD version blows the DVD version out of the water. I've tried several different movies with the same results. The sharpness of the DVD version is just not as good as the BD version.

a good comparison for upconverted dvd vs Blu-ray is The Departed... put a dvd copy in and go to the scene where Leonardo is taking the test at the academy. Freeze when they show the sheet of paper on the desk he is working on. Notice how you can read the words but they're somewhat blurry and you have to focus to read them, kind of squint a little maybe?

Now find that same frame on the Blu version and it's like BAM! The paper is crisp white, the words are black and finely detailed... you can sit there and read them with NO problem... just ONE example. There are many.

Blu-ray certainly looks better than upscaled dvd.
