Default PS3 to debut as MegaTV IPTV set-top box in Korea

PS3 to debut as IPTV set-top box in Korea

Quote:
Korea's main telecom operator KT and Sony Computer Entertainment Korea will launch an IP TV service in November that runs on a PS3. The PS3 will act as a set top box for the Mega TV service. Users will be able to download and play shows via the PS3.
Quote:
IPTV is a high-definition TV broadcasting service that allows users to download programs via broadband Internet and play them on TVs at any time they want. KT and Hanaro Telecom are two IPTV providers in South Korea.

The PlayStation3 is a powerful computing machine itself, equipped with large data storage, fast graphics processor and a Blu-ray Disc drive. It is the first time that Sony has made such an alliance to use the PS3 as an IPTV set-top box.

"With this partnership, Mega TV will include high-definition games and Blu-ray media in its periphery," said Lee Young-hee, chief of the Media Center at KT. "We will seek more cooperation with SCEK to create synergy."
More pictures and a video demonstration can be found here.

Judging by the icons in some screens, HD streaming content is supported.

There's a couple of nice looking HD clips in the demonstration video. I don't think my ISP's bandwidth fair usage policy would be too happy about it though. PlayTV it is for the foreseeable future.

its not that the service cannot be offered ..its just Sony has to wait on the US GOVT. and the broadcasting standards to play catch up with europe, and other conutries with already more advanced broadcasting standards for this type of entertainment. it will get implimented more and more upto date in the very soon future. already some states in the US are employing such broadcasting standards just not very many of the states yet. but it will happen

Looks like they're giving sizable discounts on the PS3 when bought with the MegaTV service.
