I will be checking in on it, if this is true, and sell the HD-DVD players for $50 I'll buy one as a collectors item :P

10 years from now it'll be worth some money to those guys who still hug thier HD-DVD collection and don't understand how they lost... after all how could quality beat cheap? lol

Wouldn't this mean that Best Buy in Canada would also be dropping HD-DVD? Since Best Buy actually owns Future Shop here. Not that I'd be complaining mind you. If it does, in fact, happen that Future Shop drops HD-DVD, and Best Buy Canada were to follow suit, could one hope for a similar move by the US stores?

Best Buy owns all Futureshops, so if this is true, hopefully it will begin to trickle down through the entire organization. Of course, if they don't stop charging full MSRP for Blu-rays, I still won't buy them there.

I'm pretty sure they operate separately. You can't interchange gift cards, and they don't have the same sales and even a lot of the stuff they sell is different.

I'll be checking on this as well though! It would make sense, last week they had a blowout $199 sale on their Toshiba players...

One of my local Future Shops had a very low opinion of HD DVD... so they hooked up the massive endcap on the 60" Toshiba TV with component video cables Right next to the Sony SXRD showing Blu-rays on HDMI.

Folks.... this is drivel.

They had a clear out sale of the last gen of Toshiba's before getting the next generation in.

Yeah... I saw the third generation HD DVD player from Toshiba advertised in a FS flyer a while ago. I'm not sure but I think it was either $799 or $899.

Either way, too much for a HD DVD player.

By the way...

No standalone HD DVD players listed. Weird.

The cheapest next gen Toshiba will retail for $349 canadian apparently. Watch for it at the FS website in the near future.

Anyway, this is a silly rumour, and it's a wonder Hunt would even include something this on his site.

n/m i found where it was at. anyways, im on my ps3 so i cant copy and paste (when are they going to add that!) but that article basically lists three big reasons why this has validity. 1. Big HD DVD sale to possibly liquidate. 2. HD DVD standalones are not availiable for sale on the futureshop website. 3. employees have said that they have stopped stocking hd dvd due to a lack of interest. Ill wait til the official press release before i believe it, but it def. looks good. either way it can't hurt us. god wouldn't it suck to be an hd dvd fan with a new rumor going around every week about losing more support and blu-ray just seems to gain it on a day in day out basis.

That's all very well and good but I'm a Canadian and I can confirm:

1. That HD DVD title sales at Futureshop are stagnant at the local FS.
2. That neither "Toshiba" or "HD-DVD" turned up anything other than a Toshiba laptop with an HD-DVD drive and the Xbox360 add-on drive and a bunch of HD-DVD titles.
3. Futureshop.ca offers a feature to check in-store availability for an item.
4. Futureshop is in the midst of their 25th anniversary sale and are having a 25 days of web deals between Oct 5th and 29th.
5. Regardless of the promotion, Futureshop would list products available in stores online even if it could only be bought in-store.

Although I did not go check out all of the electronics section at my local FS, I noticed that they were pushing Toshiba DVD writers on a large banner and had blu-ray players in their AV section displaying on their TVs.

Look on The Digital Bits website. Looks like Bill Hunt got the same response so this is not true.
