Default Movie lineup (Lack of extras on Blu-ray)

I've been reading reviews for some of the blu-ray movies that are already out and every movie that's out so far is just the movie by itself. I don't know about you, but we already have this with standard DVD. I know that this is the time when blu-ray is just starting to come out and like other brand new things, it's take some time before blu-ray really hits all over the place.

In order to add extras they need to get out some dual layer discs and use a better encoding system than MPEG 2.

Hang on a minute, when you say dual layered, what does that mean? For standard DVD, as an example, most of the discs have one silver side. For the movie, phone booth, the disc is double sided so that you can watch the movie in either full screen or widescreen. For the movie, dumb and dumber, there is only one silver side on the disc. I would need to see a picture or something showing the difference between a single and dual layered disc for blu-ray.

In most cases, dual layer discs have a gold data side, whereas single layer discs have a silver data side. Don't confuse dual sided discs with dual layer discs. For a dual layer disc there are actually two data layers glued on top of each other. A DVD player will play the data on the first layer of the dual layer disc and then you'll experience a brief pause when it gets to the end of the first layer and then switches to the second layer of the disc. Your DVD player will do this automatically, on a great disc you may not even notice the layer change. Dual layer DVDs have "RSDL" printed on the discs and/or the backcover of the packaging. As it stands right now all Blu-ray discs are single layer which leaves only half of the room that a dual layer disc would provide. In order for the studios to provide a great quality movie presentation plus extras on a Blu-ray disc they will need a dual layer Blu-ray disc. Those aren't likely to be used until sometime this fall.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. I think that the fall time, maybe around October will be the time for blu-ray to really explode everywhere. October is hopefully when Sony's blu-ray player will come out. They are next in line for blu-ray.

well...they'll come out with the barebones version 1st because people will buy anything right now...just to play a movie...

why offer the best option when you can potentially double dip for the special edition....

I think that Sony will include the HDMI 1.3 feature or whatever it is because it would explain the delay for their player and you get more for your money. I think that October will be the month for blu-ray.

there not gonna include 1.3 on their first gen player. I don't mind the lack of extras what i do mind though is the poor image quality so far.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but why else would Sony delay their player for October? I would think that it would be because of adding some kind of new feature to the player. I've read that the Sony ps3 will include the HD MI 1.3 feature.

That could be true. I wonder how Sony will rate when the player is first available?

I'm not disagreeing with you, but out of Sony, Pioneer, and two other companines that have blu-ray players, I'd be hard pressed if nobody could make a good player. I'm most familar with Sony because Sony has made a lot of products and from what I have read with reviews on Samsung's blu-ray player, it seems like if you make a blu-ray player, you need to make sure that any blu-ray movie looks as good as you can possibly get it to look on the player. Pioneer, Panasonic are up next and Sony is up last for October. If you pay $1000.00 for a blu-ray player, you want to get something out of it. I hope that the other companies can avoid doing the same mistakes that Samsung made because otherwise there will be a lot of dissapointed people.

I've read that the Sony and Pioneer are almost the same unit much in the same way the HD-A1.X1 & RCA HDDVD players are all pretty similar.

I had read some speculation on that same thing. Were any facts ever brought up to back it up? I'm curious to know if there's any truth to it.

I'd be really surprised if Pioneer was using the exact same insides as the Sony.

what i've been told by the pioneer rep is that they are using similar eyes but different processors and the pioneer has some other newer features.

Maybe the pioneer player will do well then. It sure seems so.

Remember the pioneer is their elite line not there standard line and yet the sony is just there standard line not the es line. I'm sure they'll be releasing one simliar to the pioneer one on there ES line probably next year.
