Default The things I do for love - wife bought an HD DVD player

My wife had a little extra money from some side jobs she did in the past. Yesterday, she went out to get a few entertainment items that she has wanted for awhile but hadn't gotten yet. She came home very excited and told me she got me a surprise. She then had me go downstairs, to where sitting on the floor in front of the TV, was a new HD-DVD player. She saw it on sale and knew that I was upset that a few of my favorite movies were only on HD-DVD and decided to use her money on me to make me happy. I was very touched by this, but at the same time horrified that I was now part of the reason the war is still going. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I hooked up the player last night and now it is staring at me, kinda making me feel ashamed. I picked love over my principles, I just want to know, did I make the right choice?

You see, my wife knows me and she knows just how much I loathe HD DVD> It would not have gotten out of the box. When I say I'm gonna do something I do it. Thats called a sellout brother. Tell her what she did was not right, you love the thought but....... Garbage at any price is still garbage.

This is a sign you need to communicate with your wife, or gf for others. My gf knows not to utter hd-dud to me and she laughs when she hears stuff other people say even when i am not around. She makes me proud.

GTsmokeya

but, yes as for this you made the right chocie its sweet she would do that.

She knew I didn't like HD-DVD, but she thought it was for different reasons. She thought it was because we didn't have the money for HD-DVD that I got so mad when movies came out I couldn't get and not because the whole "war" just annoys me, that is why she spent her extra money on me and not herself. After that, I couldn't lecture her on how she was wrong.

i believe you did the right thing. It will be ingratitude not to accept it. It's only one machine. Won't affect the sales number a lot.
If i were you, I will let my family know that I love BD and hate HD DVD. That way, my family know my preference. I guess it's too late for you to do that.
Do you actually have BD player, or HD DVD is your first HD player. That would make the difference if you actually have BD player beforehand (you can still buy BD titles to support BD).

I have a blu-ray and I own all the titles that appeal to me. I don't feel as bad about having a HD-DVD machine since last week I convinced a friend to get a PS3 for the Blu-ray, so I feel my karma is still in check. I also told my wife not to buy any Paramount/DW movies because we aren't rewarding them for taking a buyout.

You are not alone, but for me, it's not done out of love. This is because I got no choice. I am loyal to HP, and demands 20 inch laptop. I ended up buying it (with HD DVD), because there is no choice to get DVD drive instead...
I will make that HD DVD external, while I got Panasonic UJ-210 BD-RE that will go internal. My HD DVD collection?? zero. complete zero. BD collection? near 10, and growing.

IMO, you have to respect your wife's purchase no matter what. Sad (because it's HD DVD), but it's your duty as husband

hehe you've made the right choice as of now.. but you shoulda made better decisiosn earlier.

aka. MY gf / fiance knows never to buy me a gift even as a suprise cus im super picky as to what i want. Even if i say i want a mouse for my computer.. she wouldnt dare buy one on her own cus she'd know i want a specific mouse.. certain color.. etc.

: )

So i dont get gifts from people anymore.. just money..

You did the exact right thing brother. How many times have you purchased something for your wife (aka - a gift) and the look on her face was "What were you thinking?" but she then smiles, thanks you (because you at least made an effort) and then puts it away, never to be seen again?

Love is a precious thing in a marriage but keeping the peace is a damn important thing too.

Dont sweat it.......she added about a nano-second to the format war...My wife got me the A20 for my b-day in June.....I got the S300 last month......I wasnt aware in June just how all out this war is but it's not going to stop me from enjoying both until Blu wins.........but if I keep reading about HD's lack of this or lack of that I WONT buy RED until they become BLU.

You did the right thing. You have a very sweet wife, now you said you’re not going to buy Paramount/DW movies and I back you on that point but I think you should at leased rent some movies not available in blu. Because if you’re not buying Paramount/DW movies please tell me you’re not going to by WB movies for this thing. Because what are you going to watch if you don't rent Paramount/DW or universal?

You should never lie to the wife on issues as important as this. Thank her for considering it but to go back and replace it with a 40gig PS3.

I am going to buy WB on Blu, it will be hard to keep away from Batman Begins but I can keep on waiting. My wife and I are big fans of Joss Whedon so Serenity is the first thing I will buy, after that, I don't know, probably some older Universal movies whenever I feel the need, but mostly I will be renting the HD-DVD's.

Oh yeah I forgot that there are like 20 movies that WB put on HD DVD and not blu-ray.
