I'm sorry if I'm being impatient but does anyone have this yet? I know that a review is coming but I'd really like to know what the audio/visual quality is like.

So would you say the Criterion DVD actually better than this new BD? Or is the BD still better in spite of its shortcomings?

The BD is definitely superior, and the image has actually a lot of potential with very good contrast levels and fine grain; it's just a shame Studio Canal didn't bother descratching the film, as numerous speckles abound.

It's not Studio Canal, but Tamasa, which is a very small editor. I suppose they simply don't have any budget to do a cleanup of the print.
