Default Black bars question

hey all,

im new to the blu ray universe picked up my first movies tonight and was wondering if it was just me but i popped underworld in and noticed that the black bars wouldn't dissapear on my widescreen tv, is this because the movie isnt anamorphic? was just wondering thanks to all for listening

Welcome Aboard.
Underworld was filmed in 2:40 ratio which means black bars are normal. you are getting the picture as it was filmed. there is a ratio that fills your whole tv 1:85. BUt i think 2:40 is better since you get the entire viewing of the film.

Enjoy The movie. Very good!

Did you zoom?

Because if its 2:40 it is normal for the black bars

..... Another one of these? Well your new here so let me run ya through the basics... All movies on Blu are presented in their original aspect ratio so yes all movies are anamorphic... Certain movies like Disturbia just happen to fill up you T.V. Also if you look in the movies section of the forums you will see a sticky thread about this... I think i got all this stuff right.. Anyone else want to correct me?

I agree with this, but it seems like we are getting alot of new members who are starting new posts when there are multiple posts on the same subject floating around already.

They need to know to look at the Forum Main Page and see if there is a existing post already before starting a new one. I think that is fair, but just my opinion.

Just so you know...most BDs you buy will have black bars on your TV, because most directors film at 2.40:1. I remember reading this great article on the issue but I can't find it now. Really, the aspect ratio is an artistic choice by the director. Isn't it better to view the film as it was originally intended then to crop off potentially vital information just so your screen is filled? That is the idea here with Blu presentations--just like the director intended.
