Default PS3 black bars question

hi
Can someone help me with this problem. I have a 50' Sony XBR1 hooked up to my PS3, I played 50 first dates BD and noticed that it had the widescreen bars at the top and bottom. My question is, how can I get rid of these bars? Talladega nights doesn't have them, only 50 first dates. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Thanks

Most movies are shot in a format which is wider than your TV. If the people putting together the DVD decided to leave the image in OAR (original aspect ratio), then you may get those bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Some films can be cropped to fit your screen, and the director OKs this.

You can get rid of them by zooming or stretching the image, but you are going to be distorting the image and the intent of the director.

Look on back of the movies.

Anything in 2:39 aspect ratio will have black bars and anything in 1:85 won't. Some regular DVD's are also in 2:39 or OAR it's not just BD's.

The Search function is your friend:

How Do I Get the Full Screen??

? regarding hdmi and a 1080i tv (black bars on widescreen)

16:9 FullFrame or 2.39:1 letterbox formatting for Scope films on Blu-ray Discs?

Aspect Ratio List?

PS3 and scaling

any way to "zoom in" on the movies?

? ALL EXPERTS: Regular DVDs playing in letterbox (PS3)
