I always consider "Until the End of the World" Wim Wenders' underrated masterpiece.
It has an epic, ambitious scope, and I find it incredibly romantic and fascinating about this story of group of people who traveling around the world, to capture images, on the verge of end of the world. Not to mention it has an killer soundtrack! (the theme song is one of U2's best.) It is very interesting to watch this film now, which predicted various "future" technology in the year of 1999: included HDTV, car with voice-control navigation and handheld GPS-like devices. I owned the Warner released theatrical cut on laser disc, longer-cut on Japanese released laser disc, and even-longer-cut on Germany released DVD. It has not been released on DVD in USA (as far as I know.) Any fan out there? Last edited by tsetse27; 08-27-2012 at 11:11 PM. |

I have not seen the movie, but I'd like to now.
I came across the soundtrack once before. Unfortunately, I found it a little too slow for my taste, but I kept some of the tracks. I figured this was some artsy crap at first, but upon reading the imdb synopsis, it sounds like some kind of a sci-fi thriller, so I'm naturally intrigued. I would be willing to give it a try. |

I have the Italian 4-DVD version of the 280-minute extended cut, but it lacks English subtitles on the few bits where characters speak other languages. So I too would like a proper BluRay for the US market, of the 280-minute extended cut.
But people have been begging for this for years. Heck people were begging for it on DVD, before BluRay even existed. I don't think it is ever going to happen. In 2011, Wim Wenders said this: Quote:

I finally got around to seeing this last night. It was pretty interesting and I'm glad I saw it.
Reading up on the film's history (and the above posts), it's pretty interesting, and sad that it's never achieved much acclaim. I think Criterion should totally get a hold of this and release the 280-minute cut; I might even buy it if they did. ![]() |

I too am a big fan of this film. Only place I have found this was at a library an hour away on VHS about 6 years ago.I was gonna get the UK R2 dvd a few years ago but i guess it went OOP. This really needs released on some format here in the US with the short theatrical version and 280 minute version.

I wonder who own the distribution right in USA....
off topic: I do not know Solveig Dommartin passed away few years at relatively young age. But, I hate to say this, her performance is the only thing I do not like in the film. (I think she is much better in Wings of Desire.) |

The director's cut (one of my all-time favorite movies) was recently restored from the original negatives, scanned in 4K, and shown at Berlinale a couple weeks back.
Cross your fingers that a Blu is imminent. |

Wenders' UTEOTW is a film I've been waiting to hit DVD ever since I got my first player in 2003 - truly superb flick that combined the genres of sci-fi & road trip, and also being completely unique - the device that allowed you to "see" others' dreams was quite interesting. Also liked the fact that this took place in the then-futuristic late '90's, on the eve of the 21st century (since the film came out in '91).
The soundtrack was amazing as well: Lou Reed, R.E.M., Elvis Costello, U2, etc. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite pop/rock film soundtracks. Unfortunately, the last time I saw this film was on VHS tape about 22 years ago - never gotten ahold of any of the non-Region 1 DVD releases. IMHO a perfect R1 Blu/DVD release would include all of the different versions - I think there are 2-3 floating around. Like a lot of films that have not been released to R1 DVD/Blu, I'm almost certain one of reasons (and possibly the main reason) for the delay are music rights! IMHO straightening out/coming to an agreement re: rock/pop music has been one of the reasons many films/TV shows haven't come out on DVD, or have been delayed... So, hopefully this film will be released soon on R1. I don't want to have to wait any longer to re-watch this.... Note that the underrated sci-fi film Strange Days (1995) reminds me somewhat of UTEOTW, re: the late 1999 setting (also on the verge of the 21st century), and the "virtual reality" aspect....though, both films are completely different otherwise... Just spotted this listing:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Until...lu-ray/137962/ Looks like there might be a French Blu Ray release coming in November. According to the Amazon listing the runtime is 300 minutes so I'm guessing it's Wim Wender's 280 minute director's cut. Probably won't have subtitles for the French scenes (just like the R2 DVD) but I wouldn't be surprised if it got a UK/USA release soon after. Apparently Criterion are planning to release more of Wender's films, this would be a great choice. |

There is some US promotion going on, so an American BluRay would make sense. It's a 295 minute version of the film this time! (Or it has a 15 minute intermission, which I guess is more likely)

At last, it is time for this thread to be moved OUT of Wish Lists.
Today, the Wim Wenders Foundation Facebook page replied to my question about whether the French BluRay will be safe for Americans to import: Quote:

Good news, but if the French disc gets good reviews and has English subs, I'll nab that one; it's guaranteed to be cheaper. Knowing Criterion, we'll be waiting a long time for it to be released and their compression has been awful lately.
