Default Close to buying a Blu-ray system...

Two issues I'd like some feedback on. First, I'm still not 100% sold on going with Blu-ray because HD-DVD still definitely seems in the game.

See eProductwars.

I was planning on going with blu-ray a week ago, but then noticed that HD is having some big sales (get a bunch of discs for free when you buy a player) on Amazon.

So, in an effort to compare apples-to-apples, I'm trying to figure out the total cost of getting a blu-ray player and 5 really-good blu-ray discs. So I'm looking for feedback on which blu-rays really showcase the blu-ray technology (and are still re-watchable movies.)

Looking at the list I use, http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/blu-ray.cfm, I'm thinking at least Pirates, Spireman, and Planet Earth. Any others I should definitely consider when I try to figure out the total cost?

i believe if you go to the sony style website and sign up for a card(you have to be accepted, of course), you get an instant $100 off which you could use to purchase a ps3 and you get 7 free movies with it. i thought i saw that some blu-ray players are coming with 7 free movies also, could be wrong about that.

be smart and go blu.

Hmm. You mean other than HD-DVD getting owned on eProductWars? You need more convincing? How 'bout a $299 PS3 with 7 free blu-rays: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=20371.

I believe it's 7 discs -- 2 immediately and 5 from a selection of 18 by mail, whether PS3 or stand-alone player.

Any "punch" by HD DVD was driven by the one-time release of Transformers, which is now behind us. Still HD DVD has fallen far short of BD sales for the month/year and possibly week.

Am I seeing something different than you are, because all I see is a sea of blue with a few black dots.

Remember that it takes a while to get your free movies no matter which format you choose, so be ready to pay for a few movies up front to hold you for a while until your free ones come in. Best Buy is having a great sale for lots of BD titles, as are some other stores. Some suggestions, xXx, Casino Royale, Brothers Grimm, Patriot, and Pearl Harbor.

Enjoy the blu!

thats the best you could possibly ask for: a next gen system and a very good blu ray player.

It looks like Buy-One-Get-One-Free deal is still on at FYE for disney blu-ray movies. So, it is a great time to get into blu now.

Don't settle for just "good enough" that HD-DVD tries to offer. Since you already are interested in Hi-Def and you paying premium for the quality, you want to get the best of quality from BLU-RAY, not just mediocre.

Welcome!

Blu-ray has a strong lead in Studio support, manufacturer support, and quality (in terms of audio and video). Make the right choice; choose Blu-ray.
