Question Stupidest Question Ever!!!

I recently purchased a PS3, and own about 20 Bluray dvds. I heard from a friend that the PS3 plays both Bluray and HD dvds. I was 100% certain that the PS3 only plays Bluray movies but after talking to him now I am only 99% sure. I don't want to go out and purchase a HD dvd and find out I was right all along. So, my question is

Does the PS3 play both BLURAY and HD or just BLURAY?
Thanks

Only Blu Ray. Sony would be stupid to back the other side as well. After being one of the major developers of Blu.

Default Is this true?

I've heard the PS3 is capable of playing HD-DVD's with a simple firmware update, anyone know if this is true? ...not that I want it to play HD-DVDs, but I've heard this from 2 people already.

Someone asked me this also. I eventually told him that it doesn't work, it's like trying to play an xbox game on a playstation.

I'm sure if Sony wanted it, they could easily make the ps3 play hd-dvd's with a firmware upgrade, in fact they should, think about it! that would make the ps3 the hottest selling ultimate HD machine and it would bring Sony billions, on the other hand making hd-dvd's play blu-ray....now that would be impossible to achieve.

there's a rumour here I heard:
even if for now it seems unbeliebubble
what can stop microsoft to add an external blu player to its 360??

personally? that would be awesome!!!
I largelly prefer 360 more than PS3 for games at least for now... have to wait 1 or 2years before seeing mgs or final fantasy...
but I also flawlessly prefer bluray to hddvd

YOU CAN'T LEARN UNLESS YOU ASK QUESTIONS. So it isn't a stupid question. The PS3 plays DVD AND BLURAY. Definitely Not HDDVD.

That is not correct. It would do Sony all the favours. If PS3 played HD-DVD movies what Toshiba would essentially have is a player that only plays 5% exclusive HD movie catalog, whilst PS3 would play them all. Thats the end of HD-DVD right there.

The only negative aspect that could possibly come from it is that studios opted for HD-DVD format due to it being slightly cheaper or for contractual reasons.

Well, if there is no such thing as a stupid question at the moment then this one is pretty darn close. In fact, it could be close enough to actually be used to create an official definition which would then turn the concept into a feasible mainstream application.

Before I get roasted, just remember that I only said that it's "close" to being a stupid question. I didn't label it as such.

As of yet no firmware update can be created to do this. The spectrum for the ray is different and therefore you need different phisical parts.

Otherwise with would combo players be so darn expensive to make? Additionally, why is HD-DVD having so much trouble adding a 3rd layer to their current HD-DVD Players.

I am not saying that its not possible. Just no one is capabable of doing it at this time.
