Question If WB had not given HD-DVD those exclusive titles

Would HD-DVD be still in the race? It seems to me quoting a fellow member, "they gave HD-DVD a legs up" when this war could have been won early on by Blu Ray.

Yeah.. they have enough others from uni.
But they would not be as far along as they are now. And now the WB is finally getting around to releasing them on Blu, it will even the paying field more.

But the Uni figures have been pretty bad in relation to sales from other studios.

Look at it this way....Warner has a vested intrest in the developement of HD DVD. I believe they get royalties. So before we start possibly blaming them for anything remember they have been probably the best stuido so far. They have released a lot of their titles on BR when in fact they had nothing to gain from it. Universal and Paramount don't have a stake (at least I thought they didn't) in HD DVD like Warner. The fact Warner has day and date on their new releases with both formats was a win for BR.

The Matrix and Batman Begins would sell a lot on bluray. Id probably pick up batman begins.

they would easily sell 100k-200k units between the two. That would move SI a couple more % points in out favour

FUD.
Warner has been a shinning light for HDM consumers. They have not done anything to assist in the format war, but they have made some good decisions that have benefited owners of both HD formats. Let us applaud Warner, not question them.

Not to worry, Warner will announce all of these titles soon, I am sure once profile 1.1 is in place, they will start getting these out. Lots of money to be made on the Blu side, and lots of eager buyers, including myself!

The fact that these aren't out on Blu-ray makes it even more important that the BDA find a way to get Warner to go to Blu-ray exclusively, or at least keep them neutral. Like by fighting the fight with lower standalone player prices or deals. The $399 PS3 should help, but hopefully we see the Blu-ray side come through with standalone deals the next 2 months or so to be in a good position coming CES in early January to get any studio moves to be in their direction. Getting Warner and New Line exclusively would be huge for whichever side can get them, especially with Lord of the Rings not released or announced. Either side that can get that exclusive will have a leg up from that. And if New Line were to go Blu-ray exclusive at CES, the delayed titles for HD DVD would likely never hit, much like BB and The Matrix if Warner did go exclusively to HD DVD before releasing them. Just some of the reasons Q4 of this year is very important.

I'll applaud then when the go Blu-ray exclusive, give top notch encodings to the Blu-ray discs and thus largely end all the uncertainty that is holding up the migration to hi-def. It would be a real "ballsy" move by Warners if they announced that toward the end of this year.

There you go on that high-horse again.

Point is HDDVD has Matrix and Batman begins and we dont. Would they have won the war for us way back then? I dont think so, but it sure added to their software and player sales, and had they been dual-format, we'd probably see a wider gap by now.

Also as much as I love warner movies, they havent exactly been fabulous in terms of PQ/SQ. I dont want to be negative, but I dont want to worship them either

Ahhh, not so much. Yes, they have been for the most part neutral, but the HD DVD bias they show is fairly glaring. I'll take my previous statement back when we see The Matrix, Batman Begins, and V for Vendetta all on Blu-ray with top notch encodes, not regurgitated HD DVD encodes. Until then though, I for one think the criticism of Warner is justified from a Blu-ray standpoint.

Whats wrong with questioning them? Why no PCM on BD releases for starters.

I agree. I am all for supporting WB (I've bought 10 of there titles last month) and plan on picking up another 5 titles this week. I would still prefer if they gave us BD standard PCM.

Bullseyes point still stands. The vast majority of Warner releases have lower quality audio. And the PQ is good, but not great. Ill continue buying them because quite frankly they made some of my favorite movies. But im not overly impressed with their specs.

Talk about FUD. If they were a shining light, they would not have titles that are only on dud, especially now. Until they release everything on Blu that is also on dud, they are assisting one side in the war. Good decisions, my colon.

Also, if they are such a shining light, their Blu releases would not simply be VC-1 transfers from dud and they would have given them a better video codec.

That being said, I do have some WB Blu discs.

I'm glad to hear it. Which titles? I applaude WB if they start utilizing the ability of BD over HD-DVD in the audio aspect. For the record i am not anti-WB but i do question their "Neutrality" with so many exclusive titles to HD-DVD. The sooner the better they release those titles onto BD the better.

So when they made "300" for HD DVD and simply converted the sector size to put that same 30gb movie on a BD I should applaud them for cheating me out 20 GB of additional impact of blu-ray? Or as some of us like to call it, "The Warner Effect". God as my witness, even before I knew this information, I watched the movie and thought it looked great, but was still missing something. Probably the bit rate.

Looks like they did the same with The Polar Express. So I am passing on it for now. Titles like that are going on my "dvd gift list". Not paying MY money for that short changed crap.

If Paramount follows suit at the end of 2008, then we can all look forward to TransFUDers on blu-ray. Won't that be grand - NOT.
