Amazon.co.uk shows that CBS and Paramount have set Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Best of Both Worlds for Blu-ray release on 4/29. This is the two-part episode edited together as a movie, complete with exclusive bonus content available only in this disc.

I'm not a big enough fan of Star Trek to buy the TV Series on Home Video.

But... I'll probably grab this as a companion "movie" to First Contact. Good stuff.

Nice to see some great extras for it as well. Makes my choice to buy even easier.

The Irony is that this two part episode is better than 3/4 of the TNG movies.
It will be cool to have it edited togeather feature length.

I've never been a fan of the feauture length edit. When watched as one piece I find it suffers from poor pacing, which is natural as it's made up of two episodes structured and paced as such. Watched as feature length we get a good steady build up, an amazing intense mid section, the pace then slows right down for a good 20 minutes and the end climax never quite reaches the intensity of the mid section. I love watching them individually, but as a movie I find it a bit frustrating.

Agreed.

Thematically each half is different with their own independent narrative arcs.

Combining both also brushes aside the fact that the cliffhanger remains one of the all time great season finale cliff hangers.

Did they really think that through all that well? How was that going to help, when Locutus just turned around and started talking like them? If resistance is so futile why don't they just get on with injecting the nanoprobes? Just something I've always wondered. It was a great character building plot device for Picard and crew but it never made complete sense to me in the end. Later (but still pre-FC/VOY) additions to the Borg behavior may have retroactively lessened the amount of sense it makes to me which may be unfair to factor into the equation. Maybe they hadn't assimilated nanoprobe technology yet?

personally i thought it worked alright as a feature. maybe it isn't structed the best as a feature but it still is good to watch. Think of The Dark Knight - you spend 90 minutes watching until they catch The Joker, then it slows down a little before it picks up again. Granted, Best of Both Worlds does slow down a little more but a lot of movies work this same way.

i am excited about this. this is how i saw it as a kid for the first time so i am jacked to be seeing it that way again. and we will have the individual episodes to watch as well so everyone is happy. but i think this is a good way to attract people to Trek who might not have seen it otherwise. The sampler was good as it was cheap and had a few episodes that were pretty good (and one that wash okay) but this is a better way. Show one of the best episodes ever made and let people see TNG in full power. good thing for me is that I am going to be in the States when this comes out so i might be able to pick it up there and save a few dollars(not to mention having a decent cover instead of that English/French thing we get in Canada).

I think it was basically a friendly face argument. The Borg wanted someone who was well thought of and well liked so that their 'transition' might be easier.

Even to this day I still find TDK relentless and emotionally draining, the momentary change of pace is actually welcome. In TBOBW "movie" things come to a halt immediately after a highly intense edge of your seat moment, and I just find it loses its momentum.

TDK is just a bloated and badly structured movie, unfair comparison

I agree that I don't think much is added by watching it as one long episode, I like to see them in two parts as originally made. But I still might get this for the features... and because it'd be nice not to wait months to see part 2 when season 4 comes out.

it's one of the results of making part 1 and part 2 several months apart. i think had they written both parts at once, it would have flowed a little better but it wasn't to be. meh, it will still be cool to see this. now if it was only playing in an theatre somewhere - doublebill with First Contact would be even better.

I don't want to wait for the conclusion, partly because I've been meaning to show this episode to a friend of mine who is mostly a Trek virgin (I've only managed to show him 'Trek 09', 'Wrath/Khan', 'Search/Spock', and 'Tribbles'.) I explained there is a two parter of TNG that will better prepare him for the villains of one of the movies as I work him through the series. He seemed down with that. My goal is to have him through BOBW and the rest of the films by May. He's starting to lose interest again so this could be tough.

Oh, forgot. Yeah, I too wonder how that will edit together in the middle. As has been said before, that conclusion is chill inducing. To not have the overly dramatic pause and smash to black might not be the same.
