Default American Comics vs Japanese Manga Live Action!

I don't like american comics at all.. Well maybe Alien vs. Predator, but that's only because there aren't many humans in it. I've never been a fan of american style characters. However live action is a different cup of tea, and while I don't like spider man or comics, the spider man movies were AWSOME.

I will note that I "am" a Japanese comic fan, and they tend to be a bit more overkill in their plots and violence. Which is fine by me, I love this stuff. In the end spider man is a great general audience story, with overkill fighting, and lots of slick special effects. Oh and don't forget Mary Jane's nipples.

The movie is fun to watch over and over again. Gets the imagination pumping, and increases that whole "outside the box" feeling. I just wish you could kill people in the spider man PS3 game .

I'm more looking forward to hollywood using up all of the american comic book plots, and instead diving into the Japanese comic world which is SOOO much better.

James Cameron will be starting it off in 2009 with his Battle Angel movie. Then Fox starting release of the Dragon Ball Z movies.

The biggest trick to Japanese overkill stories is that the stuff most manga characters do is super overkill. Advent Children is a good example. These things have to be done in full CG, and costumes and fake CG movement won't cut it. These characters need to be completely CG the entire movie and convince the audience that they are real at the same time. We saw Jar Jar's character, even though he wasn't exactly an awesome character, he was still completely CG. Gally from Battle Angel (gunnm) will be the first live action fully CG main character in a movie. Cameron has been holding rights on the gunnm anime since 1999 in preparation for this.

Then of course there is Dragon Ball Z which is flat out the most over the top absolutely overkill in every definition of the word manga. How Fox will pull this off I have NO clue. Hell they probably won't lol. You can bet it will be heavily americanized. I just hope they don't skimp on the overkill. Matrix 3 showed kind of a basic idea of what mid air fighting would look like Dragon Ball style, but it looked sooo fake, and putting the guys on waist spinners in front of a green screen was a lame idea, and made it look even more fake. For that reason alone I can see why the industry would have to use a fully believable CG character to represent epic style movement.

The funny thing is that both Cameron and Fox announced pre-production almost at the same time. Which leads me to believe that ILM has finally developed technology that can fully replace a human actor with a CG actor AND be believable. We saw how the characters looked and moved in Final Fantasy Spirits within. Even if the movie did suck (no thanks to american meddling), and that was made in the 90s! We will see what happens, but in a nutshell I am mega excited for what's on the horizon.

All I can say is Fox better spend a massive budget on DBZ.. I don't have to worry about Cameron, he knows what he's doing. However Fox could easily squeeze a low budget and end up making the DBZ movie look like the Street Fighter movie with Van Dam. *shiver*
