HDTV artifacts

I've noticed alot of bad hdtv broadcasting is it results of broadband or tv sets

HDTV use to have real depth when it first came out

HD quality varies wildly from region to region, service to service...hell, block to block practically.


Example: A guy can have the same cable company as a guy 30 miles away but have two completely different levels of quality, etc. etc.


This is why I can't get on board with the new HD optical formats fast enough. I'm not going to waste any money on this.

Even for me here: My cable company's hardware is trash. It destroys PQ.

HOWEVER: I have the cable going straight from the wall into my TV and it picks up the networks in HD, no box, and the picture is probably as good as you're going to see from broadcast HD right now, or close to it.

I'd be over the air with a nice antenna and good digital tuner would do better than your tv and your cable companies feed. That is if the over the air signal is avaliable. Cable is just horrible in terms of picture quality as it runs right next to power lines usually. DirecTV tends to do a little better and sometimes you can even buy the box of your choosing.

I have cox cable here in San Diego and we have the following HD channels next to each channel I will rate their PQ IMO.

700:HBOHD-10
701:INHD1-10
702:INHD2-10
703:ESPNHD-10 (when HD is shown)
704:PadresHD-Local Channel-10 (padres in HD 4tw!)
705:WBHD-5 (generally not good, have had a few nice broadcasts)
706: FOXHD-8 (football looks good, so do some primetime shows)
707:NBCHD-8
708:CBSHD-8
710:ABCHD-8
711:PBSHD-8 (used to be a 10,-new encoder i suspect isnt as good)
730:MTVHD-9
734:TNTHD-7 (used to be better, lately the quality has slipped)
735: DiscoveryHD-10
740:SHowtimeHD-10
741:A&EHD-3(never seen a show actually in HD)
742:UniversalHD-10

I have 3 scientific atlanta 3250HD boxes (over HDMI-DVI), and one set on Cable card.

I still perfer hdtv over analog
The website i gave is a self help to try fixing the problems that occures with some hd feed
wonder if cable tones down hd to fit more on broadband

I used to have suck ass Adelphia(that's the only cable co. provided where i live, even though WOW was at a family members house not 2 miles away) now that time warner bought out adelphia it's awesome I even get tnt hd now.

Yeah they do tone down the bandwidth so that they can fit everything onto there cable lines. I can't wait for Fiber Optic Television.
