Default The Prestige video specks, artifacts?

Hi all,

I've watched The Prestige Blu-ray a couple times (probably 3 times) on my PS3.

I was just watching it again and this time I noticed some specks in the video or perhaps some artifacts. They look like white light that flashes very quickly. They don't take up the whole screen. Just like a little blurb of light in the middle of the picture. Well, I've seen a couple at different spots of the picture.

I've searched the forums and Google but no one has mentioned anything about the picture quality. Or everything I've read says the picture quality is top notch and there are no flaws.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has notices some light specks in the picture? I recently moved my TV so I'm a little paranoid if it's not the Blu-ray, maybe I damaged my TV in the move? =/

Thanks in advanced.

It would be useful if you could establish whether these glitches always happen at the same points on the disc. If so, it suggests you have a defective disc. If they are occurring randomly and are not repeatable, then it sounds like a hardware malfunction somewhere in the chain.

I have this BD, and I've never noticed any problems with my copy.

I have never seen on my copy, in fact THE PRESTIGE may be the most pristine film I have!

i haven't noticed any problems on mine, either.

like Bruce said above, if you could point out the times in the movie where this occurs i can crosscheck the problem on my disc again. probably just something in the film transfer, it happens.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your replies. I should have posted some examples in the first place.

One is at Time 52mins 20-23 seconds. The scene is right when Hugh Jackman has a newspaper saying "The Professor has Defied Death" and he is looking at himself in the mirror. On the left side of his head a little white speck flickers probably at the 22 second mark.

Another at Time 1hr, 2min, 43 seconds. This scene is btwn Scarlet Johanson and Jackman. The camera goes from looking at Scarlet's face and Jackman's face. When the camera goes on Scarlet's face at about 42 seconds, look near the bottom of Jackman's hair. There is another white speck around 43 seconds. This one is real apparent since his hair is really dark in this scene.

If these are repeatable, then they are probably just isolated speckles on single frames of the negative from which the film was transferred. This can happen even on recent films, and the studios usually don't take much trouble to eliminate them if there are only a small number in the film - they reckon most people just won't notice them. I noticed quite a few white speckles on the BD of 'Casino'. Admittedly this is a somewhat older film, so maybe it's not quite so unexpected - all the same, I was quite surprised that they couldn't have found cleaner film elements for the transfer.

I sent you a pm, but I didn't receive an answer. Look at the data side of your blu ray to make sure you don't have one of the damaged discs. Some of "the prestige" discs released had what looks like a defective scratch coat layer. That could be your problem.

Thanks for the comments. I did look over the disc and it does not seem to be damaged. Nothing chipped or scratched on the disc face.

Maybe it's just how it is? Anyone else with The Prestige BD verify those two frames?

Thumbs up

I can't verify that but I did love this in HD. Definitely almost RQ in both sound and picture, although that does bring out the acne on Scarlett's face a good deal.
