It's kinda hard to believe that this July will be the 15th anniversary of this film. Sorta makes me feel a bit old after realizing I saw it in theaters when it first came out.
I remember when it first came out people where going crazy over it. It was kinda ahead of its time for the gross out comedies. it made $370 million worldwide back in 1998. But American Pie came out almost one year later after Mary's release. With those two Hard R movies I think made all those studios produce and out do each other in the Gross Out Raunchy youth comedies and eventually led to all of the films Judd Apatow has either wrote and directed or produced in the last 10 years. What was everyone's view of the film when it first came out. and since it's release in the almost last 15 years has it changed for the better or not. it has to be in my top 10 comedies of all time atleast. |

I haven't watched There's Something About Mary within the last 10 years, so it's kind of hard to give my opinion on whether or not it has stood the test of time. However, when the movie first came out, I thought it was hilarious, but of course I was 13 years old at the time of its release. I remember it being highly quotable, I especially remember people running around yelling, "FRANKS AND BEANS!" or, "have you seen my baseball?"

![]() I also remember this being one of the few Hollywood films to have Lee Evans in it, it's a shame he didn't quite get recognition as his stand up is pretty superb and he's a very talented man, although I'm sure his humour didn't translate too well to film. |

I haven't seen in in maybe 5 years, but I still love it. Say what you will about the gross out humor, I think the movie has a great script and the actors are all at the top of their game in it. I love Jonathan Richman's songs as well.

I also actually think this was the first R rated film I saw by myself in the theaters. I had turned 17 earlier that year. I love the gross out type humor in this movie and alot of the type of movies I mentioned in the original post. I own the 2 disc special edition that came out on DVD back in 2003.

I was 26 when There's Something About Mary came out in theaters, and my friends and I were pretty much the exact target audience.
I was laughing all through the movie when I saw it in theaters, because that whole "There's no way they're actually going to show that... No way! They just showed it! Hahahahaha!" vibe was working for it at the time. This movie was the first notable gross-out humor release, and, as we all know, a great many other such films followed. The thing is, although I was laughing through the whole movie, I was not laughing with the full-tilt belly laughs that I have when I'm watching something like National Lampoon's Vacation, Ghostbusters, Coming to America, or Planes, Trains and Automobiles. There's Something About Mary had its moments, and a lot of them, but I don't remember it being uproariously funny. I did enjoy the whole Johnathan Richman approach, and that's one thing that I remember pretty well. The gross-out humor element overstayed its welcome quickly, and I tend to avoid such films these days. A few years back, I saw a romantic comedy, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, that would have been a perfect little film except for one unfortunate scene involving a piece of gum and a toilet. |

You had to be 15 to see this in Australia. Unless you're accompanied by someone over 18 (explain that to me... man, I hate censorship...). I was 13 and my mum took me. We were both laughing non-stop from beginning to end. I considered it; "the funniest movie of all time", and bragged to all my friends that I was allowed to see it, and their parents were still taking them to cartoons and rubbish like that.
So, after the question was raised on Facebook (I don't have one of those stupid accounts, just had to mention that), my wife turned to me and asked; "What's the funniest movie you've ever seen?" I replied instantly, with no hesitation... South Park! And then followed with There's Something About Mary. I rented it weeks later to see if I still felt that way. And I'd say... mostly. Not the funniest movie I've ever seen, and not because newer movies have been any funnier. No, it just doesn't stand up to some classics like A Fish Called Wanda in my opinion any more, but it is still a very, very funny movie, that has influenced, and structured modern comedies immensely. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut remains the funniest movie ever in my opinion. |

Any rumblings or rumors about Disney releasing a 4K of this? Saw that "HEAT" was just announced and it got me thinking about Disney with their FOX catalog. Having already seen a streaming 4K version, which had pretty good detail, I would say its worth the stretch!

This movie is still great.
1. Dumb and Dumber 2. There’s Something About Mary 3. Kingpin 4. Me, Myself, and Irene 5. Hall Pass The fifth spot could easily be replaced by Shallow Hal or Stuck On You (the latter of which I thought was just ok the first time, but upon multiple rewatches I find myself enjoying it more and more). The Farrelly Bros had a nice run in the beginning. |

There's Something About Mary is an all time classic. I was absolutely in love with Cameron Diaz in that movie.
It's crazy that the Farrelly brothers directed Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and There's Something About Mary in a row. That's GOAT status right there. |

I saw it opening weekend, and I felt it was trying too hard to be outrageous. None of the movie was all that funny to me. The storyline was weak and I didn't find any of the characters to be interesting. It made a ton of money, so obviously my opinion isn't common.
