Default What's With The Sudden SPAM?

This board has remained mostly devoid of SPAM for all that I've seen, but suddenly it appears that in the last day 3 different posters have been putting up SPAM...

Is there some verification process that can be added to the forums to make things at least a touch more difficult for these asswipes to post?

Or maybe a waiting period that allows no posting until the member has been registered for awhile?

Wait a minute. You mean I shouldn't have given that guy my full name, address, phone number, bank account information, and Social Security number?

WTF has this world come to?!?!

The reason you haven't noticed this before is because nyg does such a great job at removing the spam from the forum, but he's busy with real life stuff right now and none of us other admins had the time to clean up the forum yesterday either.

Anyway, we already have the captcha (image verification) enabled when registering and the spammers need a valid e-mail address that they verify by following a registration URL. I'm not sure what more we can do to make it hard for them, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

As I'm downunder so access this site when the moderators and the rest of you are doing other things. I see a number of these posts appear then quickly disappear. The moderators must have slept in this morning.

So posts are also deleted off this forum - but only if you trying to sell some dodgy potion or ultra cheap Rolex watches. Keep up the excellent work Mod's. Note to self don't give a thread the subject cheap Blu Ray V1AGRA. For once I think we ALL agree to the censorship on this site.

The only way to keep te board clean is, to have a short time between the creation of the topic, and the deletion.

And nyg for example, is quite good at that.
I believe it's the only way, without having to put up limitations to all members...

I think you're right Thunderhawk, the faster spam is removed the more frustrating and pointless it will be for the spammers to even try posting their stuff. That's why we're considering adding more forum moderators right now

Marwin,
Just spotted more. Is it possible to give some of us in other time zones permission to move what we deem to be spam to a hidden folder, the Mod's can then delete or re-instate at a later date. That should annoy the Spamers if it starts vanising faster than they can post it.

Thanks for the offer Blue, we will be looking to add more admins shortly that can help

We've also just added our very own "Spam Filter" to the forum that scans every new post and tries to identify spam. If a post is suspect it will be put into a moderation queue and not show up in the forum until a moderator has had time to look at the post. I won't go into the details about how it works exactly, but we're hoping that this will frustrate the spammers so they go somewhere else.

+ the fact that spammers are attracted to this forum, means that it has a fair ammount of visitors.
That's some confort if you wonder why spammers visit this forum.

It' spyware. Use a spyware/adware blocker. It's just somthing you must use and keep updating if you use Windows.

However, i have been using SUSE Linux for over a month now. I love it. When I browse the web, I only get very little popups, all related to the site I visit. All those annoying ads i had in Windose are all gone. The adware cookies apear to only affect Windows and not Linux :P

That's what I was just thinking. Since spyware/adware has nothing to do with the original topic this thread is closed.
