Default Godzilla (1998) Mastered in 4K Version

Godzilla Blu-ray

Any word on the elements used for the 2009 Blu-ray of Roland Emmerich's Godzilla? I don't recall the previous version looking too bad, but not too great either.

I don't know why Sony can't start the ball rolling in terms of uprezzing the audio to 96kHz - this seems ripe for the taking in this respect.

They're saving that for the next trip to the well.

I'm interested in Toho remastered version that they did. Who knows when it and the rest of the other Japanese Godzilla films come out on Blu-ray in Japan.

If the previous M4K titles are any indication, the audio track will be identical to the 2009 release.

How much space would a 96Hz soundtrack take up?

If they are available, all of Sony's M4K titles should be newly scanned from the original camera negative in 4K and tweaked using their Expanded Color technology, as per the THR pieces about 4K.

I honestly don't know the specs in this regard, but I know that a lot of Hong Kong blurays are being encoded as such.

Moneyball, which is altogether quite fitting considering Sony's profit motive.

96 x 24 x 6 = 13.82Mbps for a uncompressed LPCM track. Lossless compressed DTS-HD MA would perhaps be averaging around 7.5Mbps (going off the current 48kHz DTS-HD MA track x2).

So Godzilla's runtime in seconds is 8323.

7.50Mbps x 8323 secs = 62.42Gb approx. / 8 = 7.80GB approx.

Current Blu-ray A/V size is 39.98GB that's with an average video bitrate at 24.25Mbps with 3 lossless + 2 lossy tracks.

For this 4K release I can see them dropping all but 2 audio tracks, leaving English and French lossless DTS-HD MA tracks.

Depending on the average video bitrate of the 4K release, a single 96kHz DTS-HD MA 5.1 track maybe able to just fit.

Patiently awaiting a review or screen caps of this. A guilty pleasure. If there is a decent improvement then it's a buy. Maybe.

This one should offer a substantial improvement over the previous BD, in terms of PQ, which was drawn from the same master that was used for the dvd, back when Sony filtered and added edge enhancement during the mastering stage itself.

In fact, that's a good rule of thumb in determining the age of Sony masters: whether or not EE is visible, as Sony claimed to have sworn off the practice of adding EE at least as late as 2007, where, techs have confirmed it was SOP for their mastering practices in the early 2000s. It's not nearly as severe as Universal's BD of Elizabeth, and the dark nature of the photography helps EE hide more than in brighter films, but it's still readily apparent in the original Godzilla BD. And anytime you see EE, you can be reasonably certain the video was filtered to some degree, as that's pretty the reason why EE was ever used: to compensate for filtering of random noise, to aid with compression, which, filtering solutions and practices of the early 2000's were a lot more heavy-handed than the dnr that is commonly used today, even necessary for the downconversion needed in translating 4k masters to a 1080p format.

I have high hopes that Godzilla will reflect a much more sizeable improvement than the trivial (by comparison) benefits of increasing the discs bit-budget.

This actually comes out this Tuesday. I was thinking about picking it up. Is it a coincidence that it comes out a few days after Pacific Rim is released?

Awful film that should be forgotten. Or, they should at least change the name since it isn't the real Godzilla. I'm thankful they are staying close to the original Japanese film for the new reboot.

Unfortunately the nod to Siskel and Ebert didn't gain them any favorable reviews. I think Gene was very sick by that point. I think he already had a brain tumor removed.
