Every month, there is a magic number where HD-DVD fans (why the even exist I have no idea) come up with a "silver bullet" price point that will ensure HD-DVD's success. First it was $500. Then it was $300. Followed shortly by $250 and $199. I think I have the new magic number. FREE!

Would I really be stupid enough to buy any HD-DVD player that costs more than $100 now? No way!

Weren't they giving a player away in Europe somewhere if you bought Matrix ?

It appears we aren't too far off.

Default toshiba stops at nothing: A3 for $99 at BB online?

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...post1335213236

seems they are replacing their sold-out stock of A2s with A3s. wonder who pulled that trigger - BB or Tosh?

amazing what they will do.

went to wally world today to see what was up. they didn't have any A2s (not even shelf space for them). had some HD-DVDs and BluRay movies, but maybe 10 titles each.

by the way -- nice ad for PS3 and Blu in this weekend's BB ad

madness and desperation. 40GB PS3 is sold out too, and might well beat A2/A3 combined

i was thinking about another PS3 for my other hd set, but then figured it's time to step up to an Onkyo receiver so I can listen to the audio properly from the PS3.

$399 is an absolute steal on a PS3. just have to get more games like Ratchet and Clank out there

(yeah, I'm a gamer too, but I bought it primarily for blu playback)

i've only have 1 game so far -- resistance. plan on ratchet this weekend, though i have quite the backlog of blu movies to get through.

also thinking about purchasing some warner titles (Twilight Zone, Shining, 2001)

do you have an HDMI capable receiver? if so, which?

$100, Wow, that less than some DVD players out there.

You really can't get much lower than that. The biggest thing that was always going for HD DVD is the price. But now they are in the corner, how much more can they reduce the price?

true dat. so in the coming weeks, we'll see if it was all about price or not.

i think the ps3, with the blu-ray pack-in of spidey 3, should counter the tosh deal nicely.

While $199 may be a sweet spot for mass-adoption, I think for consoles, MS has proven that $399 is a perfectly viable price point.

You are witnessing first hand the final desperation moves of one dying. Elsewhere on the Forum, someone commented 'this time next year, the war will be over, and Blu-Ray the victor'. "This time next year", no I don't think so! This will be over very soon, especially when you see acts of desperation. The final days are upon us. No, not this time next year, most likely within the next 90 days (IMO). [Jim]

Much ado about nothing, I'm afraid. A few lucky souls got the A3 model...but since most HD DVD types have reassured me that the A2 and A3 are identical (not that I believe them, mind you, off the bat), then if they get the A3, it's moot anyway, isn't it?

I doubt very many people got the substitute item.

Toshiba pulling out all the stops eh? They know Warner is watching them closely. I'll bet Warner was about to go Blu exclusive but Toshiba and/or the "800 pound gorilla" called at the last minute & said "wait......here's our plan"

Default $98 Toshiba A3s at Fry's?

Somebody posted in another forum that Fry's is price matching the Walmart deal on A2s this weekend, AND selling all their A3s at that price. I hadn't heard that anyplace else. I'd guess there'd be more A3s available, and if everybody else price matches that it could be trouble.

Trouble? A person going for the bargain bin price is not going to know the difference between the A-2 or the A-3 except the number.

I hope that everyone does price match. Let everyone purchase the entire stock of A-2 and A-3 players. Toshiba will be in exceptional financial difficulties if those people do not purchase a dump load of HD-DVD movies to catch up with Blu-ray.

I wouldn't be surprised if that within two months, the firesale consumers on average purchased two movies (not the 5 freebies): Shrek 3 and Transformers.
