Another thought, instead of making the 10 set, have a bunch, and let the participants choose which 10 they want to watch?

Computer Animation

Sci-Fi-Action, like Terminator and whatnot
History
Cheese Covered Action, like Cobra, Commando, Expendables...or just cheese fom actors that have appeared in The Expendables.
I kinda like having people have a choice... I would not participate if someone choose Anime because I have no desire to watch one Anime film, not to mention 4 or 5. So someone may really not like cheesey action pics.

Another thought I had was selecting 10 from the genres used here at blu-ray.com. If a film isn't listed there, it doesn't count....

I think picking your own genres is pretty interesting, the way I would personally approach the challenge if it were pick your own, is I would pick around half or so of my genres be genres that I know I really need to explore deeper.

I hardly watch foreign films. Because of the challenge, I read 6 of the subtitled guys this month. Enjoyed them all!

I understand giving the choice, but this is really a game. Need to have some rules or limitations. I know some don't like Westerns, or Romance, and wont compete because of that. Oh wel. But this challenge is open, I think, to movie lovers who have broad tastes and willing to explore new films.

Just play fair, don't ask everyone to watch 5 that may be considered obscure. Keep them fairly broad, I guess. Animation is good because it could include many like Snow White, Toy Story, Watership Down, Akira, etc.

Well, after much consideration, I guess I won't be officially taking part this month. I think there needs to be mostly more general categories, with only a few very specific ones like this, but that's just my opinion and shouldn't stop anyone else. Too many of the main selections just don't interest me enough. Instead, I guess I'll be doing my own unofficial challenge, made up mostly of the "optional" categories. I'll probably still track them here, but of course feel free to just ignore my posts if you wish

I'm in for this one. I like the choose your own genre, but I think that out of the ten genres chosen, the majority should be set for everyone to follow with like 1 or 2 genres to be decided by the individual to watch for the month. Or, we could have like more than 10-15 genres for people to choose which ten they want follow. These challenges are good for me since I can broaden my the types of movies I like to watch.

Edit: I also want to mention, while these are genres, we could have a category of certain director's film to watch. For example, like a category where one watches a film directed by Spielberg or Ron Howard or someone that has done more than 5 films.

I like that - set the main genres: Drama, Action, Comedy, Sci-fi, Family/Animated, etc... then have a list of a bunch people can choose from for the last few (or let them make some up themselves). That way people who like anime for example can do that, but those who have zero interest in it can substitute something else.
But I would suggest we all must choose our genres before August 1. That way if we see a great fun idea for one that someone else came up with, we can steal it!

If we do it this way, we can keep it consistent for every month, making exceptions to do special challenges for certain months (horror movies in October, Oscar Winners in February, etc)
I also like the idea of different levels - Bronze, etc... great way to include everyone even if they dont have the time to do as many as everyone else.

But DoubleDown... it's your challenge this time, so you get to make the decision. Let us know what you want to do.
