United Kingdom Thor and Captain America 3D Re-releases (Disney) - October 7th, 2013

Guess the Paramount releases really were 'limited'. These new editions from Disney should feature the same disc specs, albeit with slightly tweaked art and the inevitable 'blue' discs, but exclude the DVDs/Digital Copies that came with the original releases. I'll stab if they have slipcovers, though.

Thor 3D Blu-ray

Captain America 3D Blu-ray

So Disney are just pretending The Incredible Hulk never happened then?

Shame, I quite like Edward Norton...

Universal still hold the distribution rights for that one (the others were Paramount who Disney bought Marvel from). I guess they figured it's not worth buying Universal out for it - that or Universal know they're on to a good thing holding on to the rights for a character they don't need to work for but can make a profit from.

I don't think Paramount ever had any character rights, they just distributed the films for Marvel and took 8% for themselves...

It would make sense for Universal to try and hold onto the Hulk character rights for as long as possible. But there was talk of a Guillermo Del Toro Hulk TV project at ABC rather than NBC....

'Bought from Paramount' may have been bad wording as you're right, they didn't own them per se. But paramount did do very well out of the loss of their distribution rights - look at how much they made on Avengers and Iron Man 3 for example).

ABC makes sense for the Hulk series with Marvel still controlling the character (it's not like Universal can make a Hulk film by themselves) and Marvel Studios being a Disney brand. It could also be that Universal have nothing to do with the TV show - their deal may only be for film distribution rights, I honestly don't know.

If these are Disney rereleases shouldn't the 3"d" be in the Disney form??

I think the difference is Brave and Oz are marketed as actual Disney films (produced by Disney), while Cap and Thor are only being distributed by Disney (produced by Marvel Studios - technically owned by Disney at the end of the day, but not the same as being made by Disney).

I think, as with Iron Man 3 and Avengers Assemble, they can't promote them as Disney films. Paramount got a clause in the deal that meant they had to use their logo instead of the Disney one, I imagine they got that in for the rest of the films as well. Which would explain why it has the Paramount logo on the spine (visible on 3D view on Amazon)...

They can promote them as Disney films, they just choose not to. It's true that Paramount's logo has to still be included (as with Avengers and Iron Man 3) but it's merely part of their contract that their logo is included, not that it has to be the sole one or that Disney can't use theirs - after all, they own Marvel Studios so who's to stop them?

But Disney have made the choice to keep the Marvel brand separate from the Disney brand. I can't find the interview now but I remember them discussing it when they first bought Marvel - that they wanted to have the brand stand alone. But, although I don't have that source, look at the Thor: The Dark World promotional stuff- even though this is the first without any Paramount ties there is still no Disney branding on any of the trailers, posters or even credits. When that comes out on blu-ray there'll be no Disney logo on it, just a Marvel one. And that's my best guess as to why the 3D isn't the usual Disneyfied version, even though the style of packaging matches the rest of the Disney brand.

The Variety article I read on it made it sound like Paramount had contractually prevented them from using the Disney logo and they'd decided to play up Marvel instead, because that way a Disney business was still front and centre...

If it's this one - and it sounds like it is - it's not saying that Disney can't have their logo on. It's saying that Paramount is contractually obliged to have theirs and also that Disney wants the Marvel brand, rather than the Disney one, front and centre. It's two separate decisions - having the Paramount logo on hasn't kicked the Disney one off (otherwise, as I say, it would be all over Thor), Disney decided to have Marvel as its own brand. Kind of like how Touchstone, etc, were Disney brands without having the Disney logo.

Quote:
At the same time, the deal granted Par placement on the marketing materials for both titles, even though Marvel’s films are fully owned by Disney and will be solely distributed and marketed by the Mouse House, Variety learned.

Because of the ownership, Disney wants Marvel to get the spotlight, since Marvel = Disney.

Oh, now I know why they're being released again in France as well!
I wonder if the Thor 3D SB will be re-released as well. Fingers crossed!
